I found this little one in the mountains while I was up there this past week. I released it as it probably would have died on the trip home due to the length of the trip and possibly altitude difference.
What a cutie
I believe this is a Southern Toad

0.0.3 Dendrobates auratus "Turquoise and Bronze"

I would say Fowlers since in the first pic it looks like there are some spots that have 3 or more warts within the dark area and small warts on the back legs.

It was a cute little toad. Still really small, I don't think it is a southern toad; I can't really remember their range here in NC. I think their range is mostly in the eastern part of NC, this little one is probably either american or fowlers. I also just found I think an oak toad a few nights ago.

Looks like Fowler's to me, based on the warts.
A good way to tell the difference between an American and a Fowlers is the "warts". Americans have only one or two warts per spot. Fowlers have 3 to 5 .
Cute little one .

That is a good site for identifying frogs and toads here in NC. I sometimes go to it. As for the toad I can't remember how many spots it had on its back especially on the smaller spots, but the larger ones that I can see if the picture look to have two. I think I found an oak toad a few days ago, I will have to post the picture of it soon.
