A common African toad has moved into my house and stay in various places, like drawers and shoes. Why would toads do this? Is this common?

To escape dehydration from the heat, to stay cool and they feel safe. Added bonus if you have insect pests inside the house for them to feed upon
Hello and welcome to FF! If toad is healthy and not injured, would think that toad like's your home. You can leave a dish of dechlorinated tap water for him near his preferred area to help keep him hydrated .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
Thank you for the comments I will most certainly have some water near. The toad seems pretty healthy, talks quite often to us I will just except that it has moved in permanently. My home is full of lizards, plenty of tiny baby ones and lots of frogs outside too. As my husband would say, there is maybe just something about my aura that reptiles are attracted to....lol! OR they feel that my Iguana should have some friends around

I would do anything to acquire a clutch of African common toad eggs. Those toads are really cool.
"Look on the wall behind you. Look at that little girl's face. I know you've seen it. But you know what she's never going to be able to see? She's never going to be able to see the simple wonder of a leaf in her hand. Because there's not going to be any trees. Now you think about that."

Would you believe if I tell you that this toad is still around, sleeping in my shoes. I have found that he/she will disappear for a day or two and then be back in the house.
Not complaining, I love all our cold blooded children, but it is still odd.
What is cool though, is that I don't need to feed it!

Lucky you, all I get in my house are spiders and stink bugs.
