Thread: You know you have a plant addiction when.....

Default You know you have a plant addiction when.....

My wife and I were joking about this this morning. She has known about my plant addiction for years, but we were laughing over some of the silly things I do when it comes to plants, like:

....You find a way to work in a nursery, plant shop, or any place that sells plants during errands.

....You go to Home Depot weekly just to see if they got anything new in, so what if it's January! Lol

I have a few others, feel free to add your own if you are addicted to plants!!

When you:Pass by a plant nursery without the intention of getting anything there. When you're outdoors and you see an interesting plant. You decide to get viable plant parts like seeds, leaves and stems in hopes of growing cuttings once you get back home. You see a plant. You snip off a leaf, sniff it, crush it then sniff it again lol

No disrespect, just had to comment on the post above. I volunteer for a large botanical garden working to propagate and maintain their extensive tropical plant collection. A number of plants in the garden have to be hidden from the public due to people liking to "pinch" off some for themselves, including a cactus and succulent collection that was closed to the public for over 8 years due to repeated thefts of pieces by visitors which is now only open when a security guard can be on duty in the building. Some ways of getting legal plants from botanical gardens include visiting their plant sales (most of my plants that come from the garden are acquired this way), offering a trade to a curator if you have something rare they might be interested in, or volunteering (occasionally I get permission to take a broken branch or seed pods that have fallen on the floor and I find while sweeping, I always make sure they approve and sign a donation slip for me to take it off the grounds first though). There are some incredibly rare plants on display in gardens, and while just one person taking a piece wouldn't amount to much, if everyone did it there would be nothing left, plus if you're caught you will most likely be escorted off the premises.

Well, sorry you were offended by that Bonnie. It was meant as a joke, and I would never do such a thing. I have way too much respect for the people who work their butts off maintaining the collections at my local B.G. I frequent the gardens several times per year and am friendly with quite a bit of the staff, as well as have quite a few close friends who work there and I have never even so much as asked if I could even take something from the ground, let alone swipe clippings.

Please understand that it was made as a joke and not meant to offend anyone.

I didn't think you were, just didn't want anyone getting ideas :P I know a number of people who do "steal" from botanical gardens and have seen it in action quite a few times, most with the belief that they are doing nothing wrong, so wanted to make sure anyone reading this thread didn't think it was an acceptable way of acquiring new material and give a few options for people who really do want plants from the local garden.

I understand. I have seen it happen as well, and I would hope that anyone reading this thread would see it for the satire it was meant as, but you are correct, some people do end up getting alternative ideas. Sad that we love in a society that needs disclaimers on everything, like my hot coffee LOL

I used to steal clippings from cactuses too when i was younger. I somehow hand-picked an Opuntia (Prickly pear) and i got microscopic barbs all over my hands. I was so traumatized on cactuses that i hated plants at that point in my life. Lesson learned coz mother nature's payback is always a ***** (please do edit if not allowed )
