Thread: A wibbly wobbly timey wimey build... The TARDIS Tank

  1. #1

Default A wibbly wobbly timey wimey build... The TARDIS Tank

I don't have many pics to share because I am starting this over the weekend, but I wanted to get the journal up and running. So you folk get to read my dribbling a for a post or two.

A little background. Anyone who knows me well, knows I have been a HUGE Whovian (Doctor Who fan) since I was a little kid. I couldn't wait to watch Tom Baker every Saturday afternoon, flying around in the TARDIS, saving the universe. It's really my only one obsession that has endured longer than my love of glass cages and anything within them. So, I decided a couple years ago that I wanted to build a TARDIS, but make it a vivarium. My original concept for this tank was for it to be a 4' cube tank built from plywood that would house white's tree frogs, and I still may build that one day, but I thought a smaller experiment was in order.

This build will essentially be an all inclusive build. The tank will be a 36x18x24 terrarium housed within a custom cabinet that resembles a TARDIS. This is a very rough sketch of what I hope to achieve.

The tank itself will be Doctor Who themed inside, keeping with my new thing of doing theme tanks. This "should" be my last, although I keep having the swamps of Dagobah pop in my head from time to time. I have been keeping this one a secret because I wanted to be the first to build one of these tanks. I let hints out here and there. As Paul Simon once sang, there were "hints and allegations" about this tank, now I think it's time to make it a reality. And you can only see it here, on Frog Forum

Here are my rough, and I mean VERY rough blueprints for the framing, which I will start this weekend.
This is also being done on a strict budget, my Saturday pay. If I work Saturday, then work will be done on the tank, if I don't, well, it will just keep until the following week. I also thought about planting it with nothing but plants from Home Depot, Walmart and lowes, but since I don't have a time table for this being completed, I may not. By the time this tank is ready to plant, pickings may be slim at those stores.

I hope you guys are as excited about this tank as I am, as always, all comments and questions are welcome. Even if you just wanna talk about Who stuff, feel free. until the next update, which should be in a few days when the framing is complete, have a fantastically froggy Friday!!

It's not a show for everyone. But those who love it, LOVE it. Lol I also have a couple other things working too, a 60g paludarium/shrimp tank, and I finally rehomed my white's, so I am redoing their tank as well. Busy busy busy lol

I am super jealous. All I have going is working on a final top for the Mantella tank and waiting for wood for the Red Eye tank. I am already tank shopping for the next Dart tank, but I need to buy a new shelf for the basement first so I may be done building tanks for a while.

My wife wants some white tree frogs and we have an empty 18x18x24 so we may be putting that together for them. I think I am going to save up for a 36x18x24 Exo Terra to setup for some PDFs. Ugh I need more money!

Lol before you build that 18x18, you may want to wait for the redesign on mine, I think you're gonna like the plan I have for it, but until I start the journal for it, I'm keeping quiet on it.

See, you're one of the people who can get an estimate on my age since I mentioned Tom Baker being "my doctor" lol

I watch all the new ones and the classics. You just cannot beat the writing of the classics. They were so awesome!!
