Unhappy weird growth on my American Green

Please help, I have only had my 2 American green tree frogs for 3 weeks and 2 days ago I noticed that one of them has a weird growth on his belly, I have picked him up and tried to look to see what it is and its very soft and looks like its coming out of his tummy, Im really concerned he has cut himself open and his guts are hanging out. I have checked the tank over and found a sharp edge on one of the plastic plants, which I have now filed down so its smooth, I have tried feeding him by hand but he is not interested and is a lot smaller than the other frog. I don't know what to do for the best, please help? thanks in advance Nikki Ryland

Hello and welcome to FF Nikki! Sorry your frog appears to be hurt . We need to have a clear photo of the injury so we can better access situation.

If growth came from the inside, your frog needs to see a veterinary. If an external cut that is not badly infected, can try using plain (no painkiller) Neosporin type antibiotic paste applied couple times a day to injury. An infected wound should be seen by a herp vet.

Either way recommend moving frog to a hospital type enclosure with damp (dechlorinated water) unprinted paper towels as substrate. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Hi again, I managed to find a vet who was willing to have a look at him for me and I had it confirmed that he had indeed sliced himself open and that it was his guts hanging out, unfortunately I had to have him put to sleep this morning. Im extremely upset and I will be contacting the pet store who sold me the plants, and I will be writing to the manufacturer of the plants as they were suppose to be safe for reptiles. I would not want this happening to anyone else!

So sorry to hear this . You did the right thing in putting him to rest and allowing the vet to relieve his pain. It's so sad when we lose them.

Do a scanning of your tank to be sure everything else is smooth and safe. Maybe try using properly prepared live plants such as a pothos. They are soft and nice for them to climb and rest on. If you do, just ask and we'll teach the proper plant cleaning and preparing process.

    Hugs!
