    Default Carnivorous Bladderwort - Utricularia

Some FF members keep carnivorous plants in their vivariums. Bladderwort - Utricularia, has utricles; which are small bag like bladders, that are used to trap and digest prey like Daphnia and even small fish fry.

A Bladderwort utricle is the star in this year 1st place micro photograph contest sponsored by Olympus. The winning photographer, Igor Siwanowicz, magnified the bladder 100 times. He also took third place with another photo.

    Default Carnivorous Bladderwort - Utricularia

Very cool! Thanks for sharing Carlos! I have even kept a few utricularia species in full aquatic tanks as well. Bladderworts, they're just not for vivariums anymore lol

They are some incredibly adapted plants! Those pink colored discoid and Maltese cross shaped bodies in the lower area of cavity are algae called Desmids. Apparently they live inside the plants utricles. No idea if the Bladderwort just offers them a microcosmos to live in, or if the Desmids benefit the plant in any way .
