Hi all, I am starting to wonder if I am going to be able to get nightcrawlers this winter or any winter for that matter. The convenience store that has them now says they will not have them when the weather gets really cold as no one buys them. And apparently my buying one or two containers a week isnt going to cut it LOL. I went to Walmart today (one of my least favorite places to go because of its location mostly) and they had an empty fridge. I asked the kid what the deal was and he said that it got too cold in there for them. I asked if they were going to get more and he didnt know. They are also renovating...
I guess a question I have is, how long do they last in those containers in the fridge? Can I buy up a lot of them now and have them until fishing season resumes in April? I think that is when it gets going anyway. I cant imagine they last that long in the containers tho.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Carole
Mine seem to last about two weeks in the styrofoam containers in the fridge. Any longer and its just a container of dead worms. You might be able to hunt around online and find a source.

Put them in a larger container and give them food and I've had them last over a month with no problems I had to grow some small ones out. And most bait shops have them all year. At least the ones here in San Diego because I fish all year just in winter time it's not many available so they sell fast.

I wonder if Petsmart has them thru the winter. I will ask. I dont like paying 4.50 for the same thing I get for $3 but oh well. Tuko will eat roaches but I like to vary the diet. Dennis Hopper will eat a small roach but only one a day if I am lucky. If I can get him to eat a worm, the worm is much bigger so he is eating more with the worms. The fantasy frog, Peaches 2 or Fantasia, havent picked a name yet, eats just dusted crickets so that is not a worry.
Thanks again!

I would look into starting a culture,
I feed my packman a mix of night crawlers and dubia roaches.
I have gotten away from crickets.
I don't think it is too difficult to start a night crawler colony.
and it is real easy to start a dubia roach colony.
Now the only feeder I have to buy is pinkies.
Since I feed one a month to my pep.
They say 1 dubía equals 12 dubía of the same size so of he eats one that's good and Nightcrawlers are harder to get going and established then red worms but it's possible I had them going years ago under my rabbit hutch tons of them along with reds. I tried 5 months ago to get them going in a bin from Walmart but after 2 months for whatever reason they all died. It's worth a try.

Hi, thank you. I have a dubia colony and with my dragons sleeping away the fall barely anyone to feed them to! I was thinking about culturing African Nightcrawlers. They like it warm and my house is super warm. They are big nightcrawlers too.
Thanks!

Hope this helps you find a worm source Carole: Worm Suppliers. Canadian (big guys) or European (medium) Night Crawlers are OK; but do stay away from Red Wigglers (small red guys with foul tasting slime). Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
Has anyone had any experience with the Africans? Home - African Nightcrawlers 32.00 Eudrilus Eugeniae has some info
