Thread: DIY Humidifier questions

    Default DIY Humidifier questions

My humidity isn't as stable as I'd like it. I'm currently misting the enclosure manually and it's making me crazy. I happen to have this humidifier on hand and would like to use it for Stanley. Holmes Ultra Humidifier : Target
I'll be grabbing the clear tubing this evening. Not sure if you guys can tell that I'm having a blast customizing Stanley's enclosure!

How should I clean this humidifier before using it? I typically use a bleach/water solution but I'm not sure if that's safe in this situation.

What kind of water should I be using in the humidifier (treated, filtered tap, distilled, etc)?

that seems to be a decent enough unit. But you'll still have a problem with controlling the humidity.
I would recommend getting A zoo-med HT-10 Controller so you can control the humidity
Automatically the best place to get them is on Amazon.com

Thanks so much for the tip! I'll be sure to get a controller.

RO water or you will get a lot of deposits on the plate. And if you use anything smaller then .5" tubing you may have a problem with condensation build up in the tube blocking the fog. I only use pcv for them not clear flexible hose.

I did get the humidifier set up last night. It's working really well. And I love the way the fog looks in the enclosure. I'm also working on planting a few live plants, so it has a very cool and natural look going on.

I'm just waiting on the controller to arrive now. I can't wait to get it all finished so I can share pictures with you all.

and something to be careful of,
when routing the hose from the humidifier, try not to have any dips where water can collect and stop the flow
    of the water vapor.

also to extend the life of the humidifier I would only use distill water in the humidifier.

Ha! I learned that lesson the hard way last night.

I have what is probably a stupid question about using distilled water. I've read that distilled water can be dangerous for them to soak in but it's often used in foggers and such. Why isn't it harmful in a fogger? Is it because they're not immersed in it?

Yes, when immersed in it, the lack of anything in distilled water has electrolytes, etc. moving from frog to water .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Thank you for explaining it to me. I was a little afraid of using distilled water in the humidifier because I didn't quite understand it's hazards.
