Thread: aquatics and semi aquatics for the vivarium/paludarium

Default aquatics and semi aquatics for the vivarium/paludarium

this is kind of a double purposed post. one purpose is to show that, with proper set up, you can keep aquatic plants in a viv, and the second purpose is to give Carlos the plant list for my mantella tank that i have promised for so long lol

all these plants are in this tank:

pilea glauca. not an aquatic, but a very hardy plant for any set up

shismatoglottis sp. (#1) i have 3 shismatoglottis species in this tank, but unfortunately, no collection data on them, so with help from the international aroid society, i am working on correctly id'ing these plants.

cryptocoryne ciliata. the cryptocoryne (crypts) are wonderful plants. they normally grow aquatically, but many species will grow emersed and in bog situations. this one is still a young plant and will eventually out grow this tank

    crypt. wendtii 'green gecko'

aerangis citrata. this gorgeous orchid almost died on me when i had someone taking care of the tank, but with some TLC, you can see new little leaves growing, it's making a comeback

aerangis luteo-alba var. rhodosticta. a beautiful orchid from kenya, also making a comback

lagenandra thwaitessi. the lagenandra species are close relatives of the crypts

sorry this one is blurry. it is bolbitis heteroclita

aglaonema simplex. the aglaonema species are closely related to chinese evergreens

schismatoglottis sp. (#2) i love the coloring on this plant and it is thriving under high lighting and a moist substrate

rhaphidophora pachyphylla. a tiny little shingling vine that loves a high humidity environment. a member of the aroid family. i did aroids and ferns, does it show?

notice the mantellas playing underneath the log

on the left, a mini aroid vine that i am working on identifying on the right, the small plants are bolivian jew (callisia repens)

schismatoglottis sp (#3). i love love love this plant. i got it from Lynn and it is growing out of control in this tank and my white's tank

crypt. nurii. these are growing submersed, and got beat up when i was not in possession of the tank. also making a comeback. i also have a plantlet growing emersed.

crypt. walkeri 'lutea'. i have a pair of these common crypts that will be swapped out soon for rare ones. these will be up for grabs if anyone wants them.

crypt. zukali a rare crypt in even the planted tank hobby. very slow grower, very sensitive. i have had this plant for a year and a half, in many tanks, and it finally found a place it is happy. i also finally have a baby growing off of it now YAY!

your basic, every day korean rock fern. i also have a plumosa (asparagus fern) and a divided autumn fern in this tank

cissus amazonica. and bolivian jew. the cissus is yet another aroid i am nursing back to health

pellea rotundifolia a cute little fern that i am bringing back after finding it a nice spot where it is happy. if you look closely, you may see a few new fiddleheads emerging

algaonema minima very similar to the other evergreen, but a darker, silkier leaf. you can see another c. walkeri 'lutea' in this pic as well

for the most part, that is all of the main plants in my tank. if you have any questions, feel free to fire away.

    Carlos, we good now??LOL

Finally positively identified my schismatoglottis species, thanks to some very kind fellow members of the international aroid society. #1 and #2 are piptospatha ridleyi. #2 is actually piptospatha ridleyi 'variegated leaf'. #3 is schismatoglottis pusilla.

Now the bad news, this tank is getting torn down tonight and being redone.

Same frogs, just have some issues in the tank to resolve. They should be back in their home in a couple days.

I want to update the aquatic portion, change substrates and adjust plantings.
