When and how do wild gray tree frogs hibernate? Do they dig down in dirt or spend the winter underwater?
Thanks very much, Robin in Maine.
They go under logs, leaf litter, tree roots, or burrow underground a little bit. They're can handle large portions of their body freezing, so they are capable of hibernating close to or even on the surface.
They head to hibernacula when it gets cooler in the year. Shorter photoperiod (less daylight) might also be a trigger. Up here (Southern Ontario), they're starting to disappear and head to ground, but warm enough days seem to wake them up.
