i tend to like adf if you dont have much space and want something small and i like ACF if i want something bug eyed and chubby

Although i haven't had any of the two. I would go with ACF because they are larger, more out and about, and have a bigger appetite.

My ADF were always the ones who were out and being cute and active but I seem to be the oddball, Does anyone here breed either?

More than preference, would decide between them based on space & enclosure available .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

well they can both go in a 10 gallon and they have similar tank needs other than the ADF needing a heater

    Hi,

I keep both species and bred ADFs twice. If I had to decide for one species- I´d have a real problem Both are loveable with ADFs being more delicate, but if kept in good conditions (i.e. a nice group a well planted species-only tank with lots of hiding places and fed appropriately etc.), they´re just so much fun to watch ACFs on the other hand are more active pets, relatively bold and they quickly become more or less tame. But I wouldn´t even consider keeping them in ten gallons- this is the absolute minimum for one frog, so you would miss their sociable, funny behaviour in groups. Plus, they love to move which isn´t possible in a volume that small.

    2.4.0 Xenopus laevis
    0.1.0 Hypselotriton orientalis

    4.1.0 Pipa parva
    2.1.2 Bombina orientalis
    1.0.0 Ceratophrys cranwelli
    2.2.0 Bombina orientalis

Well I've kept my ACF alive and well for almost two years, no health issues all fat and happy.

On the flip side, I was not able to keep the ADF I bought at Petsmart alive for two whole days (in a well established 20 gallon tank)!

I think I will stick with ACF.. they are bigger, more active, and become quite tame.

I agree with felis about only keeping in a 10 if absolutely necessary, i have mine in a 20L and she uses every inch and would use more if it was available, by far my most active animal

    Hi,

I also keep Chinese Firebellied Newts Gentle and beautiful pets indeed, but personally, I would prefer ADFs. They´re pretty active if kept well, whereas the newts pretty much do nothing most of the time. They are really cute and do react to me, though; but they need many hours each day to rest. Plus, their lifetime shortens dramatically if you can´t provide cool temperatures: about 54-61°F in winter and 64-72°F in summer. Simulating seasons helps a lot to keep them healthy, including a shortened light period of about 8 hours in winter and a prolongued "day" of 14-16 hours in summer. Temperatures above 75°F quickly become dangerous and need to be avoided. Although most adult individuals can be kept mostly aquatic, some avoid to go into the water. Such animals need a sufficiently large land area and only feed on small terrestrial live food.
ADFs prefer more or less constant temperatures between 74 and 79°F and are very lively if kept in a decent-sized group in a densely planted species-only tank.

I am an axolotl keeper I know how to care for the newts ... but thank you

I will not be keeping the ADF in a species only tank but their tank mates will not exactly be competitive ... just shrimp and Apple snails.
