Thread: Is there a proper/correct way to introduce a dart frog into a new vivarium?

Default Is there a proper/correct way to introduce a dart frog into a new vivarium?

Well, I've paid off my frogs and they arrive this Friday (and not the 16th...), and I've got everything sorted out after months of studying, reading, observing and preparation. I'll make a detailed thread with a load of pictures when the frogs arrive, from start to finish.

Anyway, I'm really scared about the frogs jumping out of the tank. It's 100% escape-proof but I see videos of people on youtube where they have the frogs literally near the door opening, with them open, and do what they have to do. I'm still a beginner, but this surely must be at a risk?

I've tried to design the tank in a way that I enter/open it as little as possible. If the frogs are at the top end of the tank, I'll open through the bottom, if they're at the bottom, I'll open up the latch on the lid, so now my question:

'Is there a correct way to introduce a dart frog into the vivarium?'

I'm getting two Ranitomeya Imitator 'Varadero'/'Jeberos' pair and I believe they will be packeted individually in tupper-wear-ish containers. Do I simply open up the lid in the direction of the tank and hope that when he/she jumps in it won't jump in the wrong direction out of the glass? Once the first frog is near the top, I would open it up again and let the second frog in, but just how risky is this process?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, I don't want any escapes.

    Hello,

Wow, you have done you homework! I bet you are very excited !
They are amazing little frogs. Bold, active and very entertaining. Enjoy them.

Have you read these two links here on FF? ( both written by FF founder Jon Clare)
Frog Forum - Imitating Dart Frog, Ranitomeya imitator / Dendrobates imitator (Schulte, 1986) - Care and Breeding
Frog Forum - Raising Thumbnail Dartfrog Tadpoles (Ranitomeya)

    R. imitators are proficient at getting out; plus they are so little !
I have had 2 very close calls
If possible, know where they are when you enter and leave the enclosure.

Your fogs should be quarantined first.
    Some tips:

This is good for them and you
It's a great way to get to know them, their habits etc.
