    Default Ornate or Albino cran?

I've been considering for weeks now to get a horned frog and am well read in their care requirements. But I'm torn between an ornate or albino cranwelli, the two kinds I like best. I've been leaning more towards the ornate because I hear they are the better eaters, but I really like the overall colors of the albinos (normals, strawberrys, etc) and I hear they too often eat well but are a bit more reclusive and shyer than ornates.

    Anyone have a personal preference?

Also if I go with an albino, would a 15w house bulb be suitable for use as a day bulb (for 12-hour cycle; heating requirements would be met by way of infrared)? I know they're more sensitive about lights.

No day bulb for albino cranwelli. Just normal room lighting

As an owner of an Albino of both species, I say I like the Ornate far more. They carry themselves with a little more power and their features are more pronounced.

You can use the red incandescent bulbs for heat though.

You own an albino ornate? I thought those didn't exist.

As far as I can tell Rygel is an Ornate. Let me get up some pics later.

If he is an albino he is a cranwelli.

I agree with danfrong, I've done my research and there are no albino ornatas in the pet trade.
Edit: Even found a post of GrifTheGreat saying it!

Are we referring to pink/white albino or one of the citrus albino? Or is it no form of albinism at all in Ornates?

There are rumors of albino ornates... but I have never seen a picture. I've never even seen an albino Orwell. The only Ceratophrys species that is known to produce any sort of albinos is Cranwelli. I would totally love to have an albino of other species (particularly an albino Aurita!), but until I see a substantiated claim of one I don't believe it.

As far as your original question, Bodeman: It really comes down to your personal preference. There is no real difference in their care other than the albino being able to only use red/night lights. I know everyone hypes up the Ornates' size and feeding response, but in my personal experience my Cranwellis have better feeding response and average bigger sizes. Appetite, size, and personality all vary drastically from each individual frog rather than by speices.

I'm still new to his myself but doesn't the lack of false eyespots behind the frogs eyes mean he's a cranwelli? He should have two spots of patterned skin behind his eyes which from the pictures he does not.

Since you asked for my preference, would go with an Ornate ; either a dark one (brown and red) like Colleen/Jerrod's female or a bright green with low markings (think Josh had those for sale earlier this year). No daylight type bulbs for "albinos" due to their sensitive skin and eyes.

    Not an Ornate !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Yea like Grif said, until someone post evidence that there are other albino form of other horned frog species other than cranwelli on the market, we don't believe they exist out there on the pet trade. Keep in mind that I'm sure there are naturally occurring albino species but we're talking about breeders producing them.

Well, now I may not need to look for a mate for Wakka. If Rygel turns out to be female.

    If only.

Though now I've seen more pics of cranwelli's I've noticed Wakka's head isn't as big. I will continue this subject in a new thread to avoid further derailment.

It's normal for males to have smaller heads, don't worry about it.
