Back this past November I bought 100 small nymphs and had 150ish left after I had decided to stop feeding them off and get a breeding colony going so there was a pretty generous over count. Well after months of waiting, I noticed my first new born nymphs climbing about a few weeks ago. So today I stripped down the colony to give it a good cleaning, separate the babies and count everybody out.
the breeders/large nymphs
52 mature females
18 mature males went back into the colony
16 mature males are going to meet my scorps and Morbo
45 unsexed large nymphs
Finally the babies!
309 of these little ones, not to bad for my first batch. A little over half went back into the colony and the rest into a feeder box
I'm super excited and wanted to share:beer:

Thanks guys.
One of my hissers just popped out a litter as well =) that was a wonderful surprise to wake up to this morning when I was going around misting everyone. Especially since I thought they were all still a molt away from maturity, guess I was wrong

These guys will certainly pay for them selves in the long run.
Congratulations! It's always exciting when you first find new born roaches. Well at least for people like us. Be careful not to harvest too many males.
I'm also amazed you counted out 309 baby roaches. That seems like quite the task.
They almost have paid themselves off lol, I paid $10 for the original roaches and sold some babies off for 5 the other day.
Yeah counting them out took a very very long time but I was so excited u didn't care. I only took out enough males to make it a 3:1 ratio.

Congrats Matthew!
I was planning to start my colony this week but found out B.Dubias are illegal in FL . I'm trying to find for an alternative roach specie that resembles Dubias in nutritional value as well as breeding efficiency...any thoughts?
The following species are legal in Florida:
Blaberus discoidalis
Blaberus craniifer
Eurycotis floridana
Panchlora nivea
MALE Gromphadorhina portentosa
Pynoscelus surinamensis
Roaches tend to have roughly the same nutritional value across the board; though the actual meat:shell ratio and composition of micronutrients will vary. All of these make for possible staple feeders.
I would recommend Blaberus discoidalis (discoid roaches, false death heads) for Blaptica dubia replacement. Similar size, similar reproductive rate, and do not fly or climb. The only major difference is they are not sexually dimorphic like B. dubia.

Heck if you live in Florida you might be able to go out and catch some discoids, or P. nivea. I'd recommend both for feeders. Discoids will be easier of course, but Banana roaches have their uses.
Unfortunately Nivea fly though, which could be a deterrent to some keepers (even though they look cool.) I would personally get discoids.
Yeah I guess Panchlora nivea isn't quite the beginners roach.
Still if you can find them wild, and aren't concerned about the flying, why not try them?
P. Nivae are on my wanted roach list. But my girlfriend absolutely loathes roaches so I don't see me expanding my roach selection any time soon. Would really really love some B. Giganteus though.
On a side note...
Getting 2 new scorps the end of this week/early next week depending on when my half of the trade arrives at its destination. I'll start a new thread with unpacking pics once they arrive

It might not be so difficult to convince your gf into letting you have P. nivea. I mean they are bright green.
P.nivea's are awesome roaches. Get rid of the girl and get the roaches. Jk
Hahaha
I wonder how many relationships have been ended over roaches.
