Default Toad growing much faster than other two terrarium pals.

    I have a 10 gal aquarium/terrarium in which I house 3 critters: a Southern Toad, a Yellow-Spotted Salamander, and a Squirrel Tree Frog..

My little Tree Frog hasn't grown too much.. he only eats crickets right now and I can't coax him to eat much else. Eats superworms every once in a while (super finicky.) My YSS is nothing to worry about. He buries himself and disappears until feeding time. Eats fine and is normal.

..But, my toad is growing SO FAST and he is eating everyone else's food (I have started to take him out for separate feedings alone.) He is NOT picky, either. He's not even the size of my thumb and can eat 6 medium superworms PLUS pin-head crickets as before and after snacking. Poops regularly, hasn't choked, or gotten too full.. his stomach balloons out in weird shapes too. He's nearly doubled in size since I have gotten him over a month ago (rescued from the wild as are all of my creatures.)

They all get along. There's no worry there. But, is it normal for him to grow much faster than my tree frog? I recently got a second tree frog (Cuban, I believe, because in Florida you're suppose to kill them.. but I couldn't do that so I just took him) and now, literally today, my toad is in his own terrarium (thankfully.)

(Eventually I will have a proper Tree Frog Terrarium for the two frogs and then give him and my YSS the 10 gal (or bigger, when I can afford it.) So I'm not particularly unprepared for them getting bigger.)

I guess my complete question is this: how big should I expect him to get and what time periods are we talking? I'm new-ish to Toad raising.

    Hello Anna,

I'm sure you will not be surprised to hear this as your common sense has led you in the right direction

It may look like they all get along. However, they should ALL be separated ASAP.
None of these species can be kept together, and will eventually be extremely stressed by it causing the potential for an illness.

When amphibians are stressed, they are unable to fight off potential bugs that would not typically cause a problem.
It's an open door for problems ! Constant stress causes their immune system to become weakened ; leading to a illness ...or worse. Especially... when you are housing wild caught ( WC) species.

Additionally, they all need different set-ups.

You have a good start ..giving your toad it's own enclosure. You will ,very quickly, see a big difference.

    Gotta keep going !
It's a pain.... but absolutely necessary.
Sadly, we can't provide enough space for them to be in captivity... together !

Be sure to wash you hands well between one tank to another during routine daily maintenance.

Hi, Lynn. You basically told me information I already know (and also mentioned I was going to do when they were getting too large) but didn't answer my true question. As I have stated, I am not new to any of this BUT the Toad.. And, I did not say there was anything wrong. He's happy and healthy (and glutinous.) I just was curious to how big he would get and how fast.

I have had salamanders and tree frogs kept together in the past as one goes underground and the other goes above ground. Stress free and for well over their life-cycle years. Additionally, the setup in my terrarium right now is ideal for all three.. and they have not had any problems thus far. As I have mentioned: the toad has been moved to his own as of yesterday.. I did mention that.

Thanks for the reply, though. Also, it's not a pain to raise these guys. You can NEVER think like that. :\

Hi, I am completly new to toads too. My two are both rescues as well. Maybe the toad isn't really growing faster. Maybe it just looks like it, because tree frogs are so much smaller already? It could be that your toad is just really well fed and healthy, so it is just growing up super fast. Like I said I am new to toads. I hope I helped. Good luck!

    Hi Anna
I misunderstood, I thought you wanted to know if you could keep them together?
I meant it's a pain to have to move them so it is not a shared species enclosure.

I would never think it's a pain to raise them .
    Gosh no ! I have 23 frogs !!! , and a tortoise. Never a pain here
It's my passion of which I am always excited and enthusiastic about.

Your toad must be so sweet.
If it is a Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris) ?
I'm not sure fast it will grow, but will get about 3" or so.
I do see you made a new set up for the toad which is why I said:
"You have a good start ..giving your toad it's own enclosure. You will ,very quickly, see a big difference."

Good luck with all your little charges, Lynn
