Default A sudden and sad death...

Well, it appears I've lost another frog

This evening, when feeding my amphibians, I went to check on Nivose, my red legged froglet. He's grown to 1.5 inches, and is sturdily built. I placed a dusted pinhead cricket on a rock in the water section of his tank, and let him be to feed the rest of my amphibians. When I went back to check on him, he had a partially digested cricket in his mouth, and was floating on the water, arms and legs spread out. There was some kind of mucus secretion coming from his mouse too. Panicking a bit, I picked him up, and watched as his heartbeat faded and stopped

I have no idea what killed him maybe it could've been Chytrid, stress from me being too near his tank, no idea. I'm already planning to bury him tommorow, and I'm going to boil and bleach all of the contents of his tank, just in case it was Chytrid, as well as keeping a very close watch on my other amphibians. Whatever it was that killed him, this has hit me hard.

I'm thinking, considering that Pacific Chorus frogs and bullfrogs are resistant to Chytrid (Not sure on Green frogs (Rana Clamitans) or Long toed Salamanders (Ambystona Macrodactylum)) that I might've accidentally transmitted it to him, or he had it already. Either way, this is a shock, and very saddening. I've lost 2 frogs in less than 3 months, Bumpy's had and is still having a rough time (see here: http://www.frogforum.net/frogs/23386...infection.html) and now this....

    Caspian,
So sorry... it is very upsetting. Gracious

I believe if it were Chytrid you would have noticed a decline in his activity, eating and overall healthy appearance.
It would not have be a sudden death as described ? Could it have gotten too warm in the enclosure?

My I respectively suggest you were gloves ( vinyl / powerless) during all contact within the interior of your enclosures.... changing the gloves between each enclosure. If gloves are not possible then really good hand-washing with a nail brush between enclosures w/ antibacterial soap and a really good rinse! I believe this to be ' preventive medicine' and should be a standard practice all of the time.

Your caring and attentive. I'm very sorry

Thanks for the support, guys. I'm gonna bury Nivose today in my Garden... I was really looking forward to watching him grow, and hearing his calls, too

As for if it had gotten too hot, he passed away at about 10:30 PM last night, and I keep my window open. It was slightly on the cold side, but certainly was not overly so.

It's possible he could've had parasites. Keep in mind this is a froglet I found in the middle of the road and took in because he looked overly skinny. I don't know if he could've choked on a cricket, he's eaten bigger earthworms than any cricket I've fed him. Could it have been an overdose of calcium, because I have been dusting his crickets a lot with both a multi-vitamin mix and Calcium + Vit D3.

I typically wash my hands before and after handling my amphibians, but I've only really made special care to prevent transmission of diseases from Bumpy and Gnag to my other frogs, as being a Green frog and a Bullfrog, I expect their skins to be bacteria-covered. But, I'll definitely take much stricter precautions like you've mentioned Lynn.

Oh, and Lindsey, just to clear up any confusions, I'm a guy. Don't worry, lots of people have made that mistake before

Well, today I buried Nivose 2 feet under the soil, under a statue of an angel at the back of my garden. Even though I only had him for 2 weeks, I'm gonna miss that little guy

Default A sudden and sad death...

    Hi Caspian,
I'm so sad to hear this . Wild caught amphibians can carry parasites and bacteria that may not bother them until stressed in captivity. Perhaps this was the case? It is hard to tell. Sudden death with no previous signs of illness makes it even harder to figure out. The good thing is of it was sudden, he did not suffer.

On Lynn's note, I wear non-powdered gloves and also wash my hands after removing the gloves between each tank to prevent any issues. It may be the overprotective nurses in us, but it works.

It is so hard when our babies get sick and/or pass. We try our best to provide everything they need, perfectly. Sometimes they become ill for causes we do not know. You're a great frog parent!

    Hugs!

Yeah, like bill said, sometimes rescuing a frog from the wild doesn't always work out

I'm just stumped on how sudden it was. One moment he was hopping and swimming around normally, 15 minutes later he's barely breathing . Like you said, Heather it may very likely have been bacteria and/or a parasite, though I'm still considering the possiblity of Chytrid.

I'll probably pick up a box of powdered gloves ASAP, especially for use with Gnag and Bumpy, considering that Bumpy may now possibly have a beginning-stage fungal infection and Gnag is, well, a bullfrog and bullfrogs are known to be carriers of Chytrid and have a lot of bacteria on their skin.

To think of it, Levi, Thermidor, Gnag, Bumpy, and possibly even the salamanders may all be infected with Chytrid, because, knowing that bullfrogs, Pacific Chorus frogs and (most likely) Green frogs are resistant to the fungus, it may have spread from them to Nivose, and had gone undetected, because Nivose was spending a bit more time in the water than before in his last couple of days.

Thanks for the kind words everyone I appreciate the support.

It was probably a typo, but make sure they are NON-powdered gloves, and rinse them in your frog safe water before going to work. Vinyl are recommended if you will be handling tadpoles. The nurses know of what they speak

I'd be interested in hearing anything about Green Frogs and chytrid resistance that you've seen.

Oh, my bad! Sometimes this keyboard slips up on me, or I don't doublecheck. Yes, non-powdered gloves.

I'm not sure, but considering how high the Green frog and Bullfrog population seems to be in Vancouver and where I live, and that Chytrid is apparently present in Vancouver, as well as how similar Green frogs are to bullfrogs, it may be possible that they, too, are resistant.

I'll try and do some fieldwork for you if I can, see if I can find a Chytrid-infected area and search for Green frogs, not just bullfrogs. I already have seen the effects of what the introduction of bullfrogs has done to the Red Legged frog population, but I'm curious to know if any at my local lake are infected. If they are, then the huge population of salamanders, Chorus frogs, and Red legged frogs not a Km away may be in serious danger, which I'd immediately report to the BC Frogwatch.
