What is the best available bedding to use for a cane toad, and what is a suitable cage size for an adult?
I would say a 30-gallon tank would be the minimum. Larger is better. I use coconut bedding with my rococo toad.
Just wondering, how much does a Colorado river toad cost?
How much you got? Usually around $75 - $125.
Does the cane toad require any kind of heating or lighting? I know I'm alternating between different kinds of animals, but I'm trying to decide between:
-Pyxie frog
-Cane toad
-Ornate Pacman frog
-Colorado river toad
Right now, I'm kind of leaning toward a cane toad, though.
Not sure about the two toads, but if you have limited space ornate pacman frogs can live fine in a ten gallon tank and they need an uth on the side to keep temps in the low 80's. Cane toads are more active then ornate pacmans though.
I'd personally say a 40 gallon breeder tank is the way to go for a cane toad; 30 gallons is to small especially if it's a high. Even then they can leap that in one bound so it's good to take them outside in the grass to hop around. Room temps (70's-80) should be fine and no they don't need any lighting other then natural light.
I agree the minimum size in a glass tank should be a 40 breeder. 30s don't have that much floor area. But instead of spending a bunch of money on a heavy glass tank that is still not really that large.. consider using a plastic storage tote. You can either cut out the lid and glue in screen, or use a hole saw and cut holes around the outside, then screen them (this method is better for high humidity animals).
I'm in the process of moving all my large frogs into these, They don't crack, they are lightweight to clean and move, super cheap, have more ground area, and stackable when not in use.
You can see one of my Smooth Sided toads sitting on a cork slab if you look close.
