Default Heat mat or exo terra hood?

    Hi guys,

i have posted here before as I am new to owning my wee froggies, so thanks in advance for all of your help. I currently own 2 whites tree frogs- they live in the large exo terra setup. It's taken me a while to learn how to get all this right and I am pretty sure I am on my final questions now!

humidity is no problem ( always between 50-70% depending on time of day) but I am a little concerned about heating. My little guys tend to be brown most of the time, only really going green during the day, when they are asleep on the heat mat that I have on one side of the tank. They may just be brown to blend in with the moss/ dark etc but I just wanted some advice on heating to make sure I am doing right by them.

currently I have a large heat mat (100w) set to 75f on one side, the cooler side of the tank reads as 50-60. Is this enough or would you recommend that I have bulbs set up instead/ in addition? If so which bulbs? The guy in the pet store I bought them from said the heat mat would do, just wanted to double check.

    thanks guys,

    Chris

A warmer day temperature of 85F is recommended. Not sure understand right; but you have the heat mat inside enclosure? If so, move it outside.

Mats are not the most efficient heating elements. You can use a lamp fixture to provide additional heat to enclosure. If going with a top; ZooMed's normally handle more wattage than ExoTerra's. If keeping light on 24/7 for heat, reccomend a red or black bulb. Stay away from UVA type bulbs or spot lamps for reptiles. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

With a 100W heating mat attached to the side it should be more than enough. I currently have a 18x18x18 exo terra vivarium and with an 14W heatmat attached to the outside and I had 79 on the heat side and 69 on the cool side of the vivarium in winter.

I use two 40 watt (one red, one black) bulbs which keeps the 36x18x36 at 85 on one side and low 70's on other side.

    Sharing:
Heating has always been a issue for me as well ( especially for my 2 -36" high tree frog enclosures) . I have had great success with exo-terra heat cables and ceramic heater bulbs. My enclosures are in my unfinished / unheated basement. The ceramics are suspended from the ceiling and the cables are -outside- the enclosures an inch below the bottom glass.( not real warm- but takes the edge off) Of course, adjustments( in heat and humidity) needs to made during the year as the seasons change. Think about the use of timers; they are a valuable investment.

I have had really good luck with my set up of a 18X 18 X18 exo terra
with a eco terra CFL hood with two 5000K `60W bulbs 75W ceramic and a 50W infra-red bulb.
and a medium zoomed UTH on the side.
with a zoomed reptifogger ( that has a bad fan ) I am going to do a write up on how to repair it, its real simple.
Controlled by a zoomed HT-10 For my pack man I have it set to 82F for day time and 75 for night and 72% RH
I have the CFL on a timer and a red LED strip that comes on after the CFL are off.
With the sensor in the middle of the enclosure
Sorry the pict is a bit fuzzy.
