Hi all,
I saw today a so cute young albino pacman frog at a pet store near to my home. She/he was in a nice little enclosiure with moss + soil, 70% humidity and 27°C, and smooth light. Perfect. I could see also she/he has a nice feeding response, because was very reactive to my fingers moving in front of her/him
I would like to take this nice frog at my home but, as I don't have any heat cables, I can heat its enclosure with a 50W Exo Terra basking spot.
My idea should to put her/him in a fauna bow with a litlle bit dechlorinated water, to put this fauna in a 18 x 18 x 18 Exo Terra terrarium, and to heat with this 50W bulb.
Now my question :
Is there a special warning with a basking spot 50W for an albino ?
Isn't it dangerous for her/his skin and eyes ?
Thank you.
Albino Pacman eyes and skin are sensitive to light. You can use ceramic heat emitters, red bulbs, or black moonlight type bulbs to warm their enclosures.
What is a "fauna bow?"
Also, your frog prefers a shredded coco substrate (like ABF) to partially bury in with a water soaking dish .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
Thank you Carlos.
Fauna box
For a baby of 2cm, I really prefer to care it in a little fauna with warm water for some weeks.
=> It can't swallow substrate
=> You can take alook at the poops to see if everything is ok.
I never succeeded to heat anything with red light or moonlight bulbs. These things don't heat anything. I already tried.
I will never get 26°C on the substrate with a basking spot moonlight bulb placed on a 18x18x18, with 22°c ambient temperature.
Its not hard to get adequate temps with a UTH placed on the side of the tank and a 50 watt infrared bulb in combination. I use this method and yes they heat very well. I'm not sure why you have trouble with these bulbs GRABibus. I've not had trouble heating this way.
As long as you can get the temp to at least 78° F (25°-26° C) you should be fine.
Not sure if available in France; but the Zoo Med Mini Heat Mat can be affixed directly to plastic critter keeper type enclosures .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
Ok, here is the temporary enclosure for my baby albino pacman frog which I get on next Wednesday
This is a temporary enclosure for some weeks, until it becomes a subadult.
- An 18x18x18 Exo Terra with 3 faces hidden with posters.
- A breed box in which the frog will be during weeks, with water or a little bit soil (I don't know yet).
- Heat is made by a 75W Hydrokable plugged on a thermostat
- Copact top Tarrarium Canopy from Exo Terra with a 2.0 UVB 13W Reptiglo which I attenuate a little bit.
If everything goes well, as soon as it is enough big (Subadult), the frog will leave in this 18x18x18 with appropriate substrate, water bowl, fake plants and one bark to hide.
Maybe I will add a 50W Infra red light above the coldest point (Just at the entrance of the enclosure, at the opposite of the cable on which you see the Exo Terra ring thermometer) because this point is a little bit cold according to me, means 23°C at 22°C ambiant temperature (The cable doesn't heat enough this point). What do you think ?
Should be ok. Do you have the heat cabel controled by a thermostat? If not then do so otherwise it will become to hot. Use soil rather than water. It is safer and makes the frog less likely to tox out.
This should work temporarily. I have a very large female in an 18" cube like this and they are nice tanks. You might want to get a piece of plexiglass and drill som holes in it to cover half of the screen top. This is what I did and it helps maintain the climate inside. I have the light hood, but dont use it because it doesn't allow me to dim the lights.
Thank you for this swift reply.
Yes, the cable is plugged on a thermostat. But it doesn't allow a day/night temperature controlling. I will buy the TCP2 from Lucky Reptile soon.
I cover half of the front top cover as you can see and also 3/4 of the back top cover on which there is the compact top.
At the coldest point (Where there is the circle thermometer from Exo Terra), should I let like this ? This point can be at 23°c if I have 22°c in my room.
Or Should I add a infrared light just above ?
