White dumpy neurological problems?

Hey everyone. I've recently noticed a problem with my white dumpy tree frog, and I've been attempting to research the condition further, but have had no luck.


My tree frog, Shnooks, is about 7 years old and within the last 3 months lost her friend/cage mate to old age. She has had strange symptoms such tilting her head to the left, her left eye seems a bit swollen as well, and she swims in circles in her water dish. I've also noticed her left ear is smaller as well. She still has an appetite and is eating normally, but I suspect some kind of neurological problem.


Anytime she is in her water dish, she spins in a circle constantly and doesn't stop for a while. The dish is shallow enough to where she can't 'drown', but this is still a concern.


Again, the main symptoms I've spotted are the tilt of the head, swelling of the eye, and a smaller ear. Other than that, coloring, appetite, shedding/molting is normal.


Does anyone have an idea or possibly know what is going on? If so, is this treatable by home-remedies or should I consult a veterinarian?

Hmmm... I'm not sure. Photo's of your frog would help us a lot in identifying the problem.

Have you been dusting her feeders with a calcium + Vitamin D3 mix 2X a week, and multivitamin 1X a week?

If you are really concerned, or it gets worse, I'd definitely recommend a Vet. Make sure it's a Vet that treats exotics.

Hello and welcome to FF! Agree with Caspian recommendation to contact a veterinary. Is left eye cloudy by any chance? Not sure what is going on, but appears physical face issues and neurological problems are related. If local vets are not experienced with frogs; try and contact Dr. David M Frye (734)439-2273 and discuss frog issues with him. Good luck !

Hm... Neurological definitely sounds like a possibility, but it sounds like it could also be an ear thing. If they have an inner-ear infection or something, that could cause the tilting and could maybe have spread and be making the eye look swollen?

I agree, vet visit would be best.

Always dusting, good lighting and humidity as well. Since I live in Colorado it's very dry here so I take extra care with foggers and misting. Thank you for your input.

Most likely your frog has a bacterial infection, but that could only be determined by a vet. Head-tilting is a serious matter and can be linked to:
infection (bacterial, viral or fungal) or trauma. A fecal sample will be very helpful to rule out any internal parasites. Good luck and hope your frog gets better.
