Default New Baby WTFs... One seems to have issues. Please advise!

    Hi all,

So I just bought four new baby WTFs. They seem to be adjusting well to their new home.

However, one of the four, Skinny, is very frail looking, compared to the plump others. He also stays very low in the enclosure that houses them, and does not hop much. When he (unsure of gender, actually, but calling Skinny a him) walks, he seems clumsy and weak, and kind of erratic. It seems as though he puts arms down at strange times to help support himself.

I have literally had the little guys 3 nights, and have just noticed this. I am wondering if it could be some sort of illness. Anyone recognize this description and have any advice? He has eaten at least a few dusted crickets since I have gotten him, and actually ate his shed the night I brought him home.

Here are a few images - tried to get some while he was walking to display the awkward posture, but it was difficult to capture well.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

    Thanks,

    Hi Phil,
I'm sure you have already decided to keep a very close eye on him.
I would quarantine him separately for as long as it takes for him to look better to you.
This way you will be able to monitor how he is thriving, growth, food intake , poop etc.

    Thanks for your response.

Any thoughts on potential bone disorders or something of the like? He is sleeping higher up in the little tank now, at least.

I don't have anywhere I can quarantine him, really, and he is hunting like normal. Just is clumsy and kind of weak.

He is separate. Making sure food intake is good, hoping he will strengthen up.

    Hi Phil,

Are you using calcium with vitamin D3 and multivitamin supplements?

    Hi Heather,

Yes, I am using Reptivite from Zoo Med.

He is eating, and I found a little turd today, so I am thinking things are functioning normally, the little one was just kind of weird.

I went in to Petco, and they were speculating that he may have been outhunted by his tankmates (he was one of eight), leading to being on the smaller side. Making sure he eats now, though!

Reptivite is good. Use it one day a week. Also pick up a separate calcium with vitamin D3 supplement and lightly dust the food every other feeding. They need the extra calcium/vitaD3 to prevent tetany and MBD.

I'm glad he pooped for you .

Well, came home after class today, and the little one is dead. Wish there was more warning.

Seems like something from before I had it though... I picked Skinny out cause he/she didn't hop away when I picked it up. In retrospect, maybe that was because it was ill somehow. All the others wanted to get away and are now doing fine.

    Thanks for the effort everyone.

Awe . I'm sorry, Phil. It's always tough to lose one. I hope your others will continue to do well for you.

Be sure to get some calcium/vita D3 reptile/amphibian supplement to prevent MBD and deficiencies.

Trust me, you will still need the extra calcium. I have rescued a good bunch of frogs and toads, alongside the direction of a herp vet .

Sorry for your loss. It's always hard to lose a little one and not know why.

Just to be on the safe side I would dust the other's crickets daily with just calcium w/D3 and do the Reptivite once a week. At least for a few weeks since you don't know how they were treated before you got them. It's possible that they never got a calcium supplement.
