He tries, but just opens his mouth, bumps the cricket, and pushes him away. It's like his tongue is not sticky enough to grab the food. Any suggestions?

It might be vitamin A deficiency. This can cause “short tongue” syndrome, but this is reversible. Just make sure your multi vitamin supplement has A in it. I see this in my toads when they've been underground for a few months. Several feedings w/dusted feeders bug with the multi vitamin and they are back to normal.
