Hello-I just purchased a Red eye tree frog yesterday
From a local pet store. It appeared to be in good health, body condition
looked good, skin color looked nice, overall looked ok. But when
the sale associate was putting him in the box I notice a brown color
around the eyes, didn't think that was normal. I didn't say anything b/c I already
ppaid for him and wasn't 100% sure it was abnormal. But upon closer
look I could see with a light that it was not normal. I already contacted
the store, they will call me back Monday. He is in isolation. Looks like skin infection
or beginning of fungal infection, small brown color above eyes, can't post picture on
here iPhone wont let me. But I could email a photo to someone if need be.
Thanks for any info!
Hi,
Sorry about your frog.
We really need a photo.
This discoloring could possibly be there because he needs to soak and shed?
Make sure he gets a good soak ( de-chlorinated water - only ) , then re-evaluate what you see ( or saw - hopefully )
Could you possibly take a photo w/ your iPhone/ email it to yourself, save it on your pc or laptop desktop/ then upload it to here!
( to upload click on go advanced then click on manage attachments)
or............you could email Dr Frye today--- he would likely get back to you tomorrow.

But , I really think he needs proper humidity, a shed, and a soak - first.
Cover three sides of his tank, keep him real quiet ( out of foot traffic) , no lights at night ( provide a consistent day/ night cycle) , don't handle him ! , feed him well
He should be in a quarantine tank. If he is not---any questions , please ask.

Here is a picture of him, its right above his eye where the skin is abnormal. Thank you for your information! Yes he is in quarantine, I use distilled water to mist him and provide him with a shallow dish, he is on paper towels as well. I covered part of his tank with a blanket, and he is in a relatively quiet area, in my room. Thank you for all your help!
Hi ,
He's really nice looking. And not thin ! Good sign.
Did he soak ? Does this spot above his eye look the same since this last post ?
When misting, mist the tank only.
His water - in his soaking dish- and his paper towel substrate ----- -should be de-chlorinated.

Hello-
Yes he is a plump little guy which I liked about him he
lookec good and healthy when I saw him, he just has that
small area of damaged skin above his eye. He seems to be eating well and had a normal looking bowel movement. The spot looks the same no worse. Yes I am using water without
chlorine, using distilled water right now. Will be sure to mist just
habitat and not frog, using paper towels too and cleaning daily. Thanks for
your help! I will keep u posted!
Distilled water and de-chlorinated water are vastly different.
One can mist the enclosure w/ distilled water as it prevents stains from forming on the glass.
Distilled water has no minerals.
Our red eyed tree frogs should soak in de-chlorinate water. The paper towel should be soaked w/ this de-chlorinated water as well.
You can de-chlorinate tap water very easily using a herp safe de-chlorinater found at pet shops ........ ie exo-terra 'Aquatize'
I'm interested in hear how he ( actually - she?) is doing tomorrow. Please let me know

Hello again-
Hugo(his name) seems to be doing well so far. The spot
above his eye on one side seems to be resolved and the other spot is
looking better, no worse and not spreading. Still eats well and acts normal.
You said Hugo maybe a female? How do u know when they are this young or
u were just saying maybe a she or a male? Thanks for all your help, I read a forum passage
on here about using de chlorinated water versus distilled, learning a lot
on here!
Hi meglvt,
How is she? How are those spots doing. I hope all is well ? She is beautiful and looks well cared for
I called your frog a her(?) because you had mentioned it was young-- she looks to be a good size.
But mostly it was because of the more rounded body shape. That plumpness
When she is sleeping on the glass --measure her snout to the vent-length by placing a ruler against the outside glass.
An adult male red eyed tree frogs averages about 2 to 2½ inches; females average 2½ to 3 inches.
Mature males may have darker skin on the throat and nuptial pads when in breeding condition.
To be 100% the male calls , a female will not ( although they can make sounds , especially if startled)
And, of course the size difference.
I'm glad you were able to read more about the water. It's very important to use the de-chor.
Talk to you soon
