I have to ask even though the subject may have been talked about before here and elsewhere. After doing multiple searches I keep coming up with old search results dating back to 2004-2009. And even those results culminate to arguments, personal preferences, and yada, yada, yada...
I've heard it all; Yeast, fish flakes, mushrooms, dog and cat biscuits crushed up...As of today, 01-25-2013, what is the best, safest, and most nutritional thing to feed a springtail culture that is going to be fed or seeded into a PDF tank?
The most recent food items for them, and by far the most mentioned, are fish food flakes and bakers/brewers yeast. I don't know the different in yeasts for springtails. I do know I tried bakers yeast, 2-3 grains sprinkled in top for fruit flies and crashed almost every culture and they turned soupy too fast. Switched to brewers yeast mixed into the media and they produced a lot more and I never had a culture turn runny until it was well into going bad.
I'm using brewer's yeast for my cultures. It seems to be working very well, except I do need to feed them extremely frequently (like every other day). I also keep mine on charcoal, which I really prefer.
The guy I bought mine from fed his uncooked rice. I have also heard about using fish flakes. I seem to recall that some people have had some sort of issue with things like that, maybe mites or something? I don't really remember. I know plenty of people who use things like that and have no problem, so I think it's a matter of personal preference.
I've been using uncooked rice. I even throw some uncooked rice into my viv every now and then.
