    Default Locusts, YUMMY!!!!

Thought I'd try something new wth Yoshi and Toad (White's tree frogs) and bought some little 'hoppers'! Well, They were only in the terrarium for a few seconds before Toad (who is recovering from an op) pounced. He ate 3 within a minute or so. I'd say they were a success!! I tried to get some action pics, but the frogs are just too fast!! Also, I don't find the locusts as offensive to the eye as crickets.

I prefer locusts to crickets - they seem meatier to my eye too.

I read that they were meatier, and really want to get Toad back into perfect condition. And, even better, THEY DON'T SING!!! (or do they...? )

I've never heard them sing. I think they need specific conditions to do that.

It's alright Kurt, I'll forgive you. Eventually. I only wanted to discuss locusts... Thought I was safe from Idol on this site. Alas, there is no escape from Simon Cowell & Co..... lol

Hi spooky, I breed Locusts(photo's in album). Not sure if they are the same as your type but any way, Ive only heard them make like a fluttering sound and from watching them i think it's when the female is telling the Male to go away. I find locusts very good as feeders. They don't smell or make a irritating noise and don't bite. They only will kick out their back legs when you hold them and it doesnt hurt at all. They are very light in weight than what you expect when you go to hold them. I also find that the stages they go through from hatch-ling is perfect for all sized frogs. OH..and they make my Frogs poos a pretty pink.

I've never seen them for sale as feeders at any of my local pet stores. Where do you guys get them?

They're commonly available as feeder insects in Britain and Ireland. I've never seen them for sale in the US, likely due to their potential to be a real pest in warm climates. However that is an assumption on my part ("educated guess"). This is probably the reason you don't seem them in Canada either.

That's too bad. I go through 500 adult crickets a week. Even though I clean out their cage daily, they still smell, and are very loud. I was excited by the idea of feeding locusts. The only cricket alternative I know of thats available locally are Dubia Roaches.

I'll have a look at your album Ebony. Are they easy to breed? The ones I buy are really small, 2 cm or so. The frogs really do love them! I'll look forward to some pink poop, the blacky-brown poop is getting tedious

They are soooooooooooo much easier to handle than crickets ... but absolutely ravage planted tanks!
