Smile Can I use superglue for a DIY fountain project for my FBT?

I noticed my filter has way too strong of a stream, and my little Hermes often finds himself (Or herself) getting caught in the rapids. I don't want to have to scoop out a dead frog due to my inexperience. I was planning on building a rock structure around the filter so it would trickle, rather than jet into the pond. Will superglue be okay to use to glue the rocks together? Or should I get a aquarium safe silicone? If so, could you recommend some brands for me? Also, how long do I need to let superglue or silicone set before I am able to place it back into the tank?

Superglue will be safe, but.i'm not sure if it will be strong enough since contact points are very small between rocks. Silicone could be your best bet. Ge silicone ii is my choice of brand. But anything that is 100% silicone with no mold and mildew inhibitors will work just fine. 2 part epoxy is also an option.

Thank you. But how long will my frogs have to go without a filter while the silicone sets?

They would need to be out of the tank for 24 hours minimum. The fumes are bad for them. Best bet is to build it outside the tank and the superglue it to the filter after it cures.

Okay, thanks again. But once again, how long should I wait for the superglue to cure before I put my frogs back in their aquarium?

The superglue won't hurt the frogs. But you can remove them while the glue sets up, about 15 minutes or so. Get the gel, it makes working with it easier and you'll get better coverage. I use dollar store superglue. 3 vials for a buck, can't beat it....lol you can even apply it under water, but obviously, in your case, turning the filter off would be best.

Building it outside with silicone as Bill suggests is a good idea, when it doesn't stink like acetic acid then it's cured and ready to go in.

Silicone from Home Hardware (it's also sold individually) Home Hardware - 3 Pack 300mL Multi-purpose Clear Silicone II Sealant They also sell the guns to hold the tube, but unless you need to finely control the application you can just use a stick as a plunger if you want to go cheap. It's worth getting a gun if you're going to be using silicone often though.

I'm also a fan of dollar store super glue, it's not a big loss when the tiny tubes get gummed up or glued to your fingers.
