it's funny, quite a few orchids smell quite bad, it's to protect them from being eaten. you would thin such a pretty flower would smell good. wrong...LOL can you get a clear pic of the bud and/or flower? that would be helpful. we may have to wait until it blooms to get a better id.

are the petals rounded? I only ask because there are some funky looking orchids out there that have very distinguished shape or markings.
If it is small and in clusters it may be a Dendrobium. they bloom in little cluster on one stalk. they are supposed to have little fragrance, but hard to detect if you dont know it.
here is the Dendrobium kingianum which I think may be what you have, but you would know best since you have seen the bloom already. The problem I have with the ID in your picture is that the leaves are more broad and rounded than a Dendrobium but hopefully Bill can correct me on this one since he is the orchid Guru.

    Another guess could be Epidendrum

but again the leaves are pretty narrow on this orchid and it is very stalky.

far from a guru, but thanks Ariel...lol the problem with orchid id's are that there are almost 5000 or so species described. i think that is the last number i saw. with about 1800 in madagascar alone. it does look like a mini dendrobium to me, but it could be a couple others as well. it is so much easier to id them when they are in bloom.

Tammy, that is an excellent site, but they only list the common ones. i noticed aerangis is missing along with a few others from SE Africa/Madagascar area

    Hi,
This is very thoughtful of you ! Thank You
I think it's a more common orchid as I purchased it (at least 4 yeas ago) from big nursery.
If I wait until I am 'graced' with a blossom, it will be more easily identified?

It is most definitively doing well. I have to admit ...I gave it to my Mom shorty after I purchased it because it did nothing. Or, in other words...I could not get it to do anything !!! She has a green thumb; and naturally got it to bloom ! I took some cuttings in Oct , and that was that.
I guess it likes where it is?

    Thanks again
    Lynn
