number 5 bottom looks like a dracaena. crypanthus don't normally curl their leaves like that and the serrations are too far apart.

Lynn, i 8 is Aglaonema 'Siam Aurora'. and i believe 1's leaf shape to be too long and narrow for a calathea, and the variegation is too narrow along the vein, but it does look similar

Love this thread bill! I'm a big fan of black jungle myself I love sone of joshs plants as well but iv had more then a few just not make it. But truth be told I am a big eBay shopper an find some great gems on there I was wondering if anyone has ever delt with duck weed? I recently bought some for the big water area in my mossy tank. Love how it looks an the Benificial aspects intrigued me. Does anyone know it's growth rate in a vivarium? Iv done some research but come up with conflicting answers.

Duckweed.....or as we call it in the planted tank world, herpes....can't get rid of the stuff once you have it....lol it's like any other plant, the more intense light, the faster it will grow. Give it lower light levels, and it will grow slowly, which is best. I had it growing on top of an 8g shrimp tank with high light and co2 supplementation and i was scooping wads out every week. If you're looking for something that resembkes lily pads, amazon frogbit (savinia natans (?)) is the way to go.

Is this your Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum)? http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/f...ails.php?id=61 Do you know if this something that would propagate rampantly in an outdoor pond in the summer?

    Salvinia natans
looks like a bunch of venus fly traps mashed together floating on the surface of the water. I've seen pictures where the leaves lay flat on the surface of the water, but mine never did that.

Default Re: the ultimate (?) plant thread

That's the one Brian. I hate floaters, and only occasionally use them. They are awesome at sucking up excess nitrates. I was also thinking of salvinia minima. Natans is a floating fern. I'm sure most of the salvinia sp. Would do well in a pond during summer. Also, water lettuce would be good, but i need to find the latin name for the one i am thinking of. Like baby tears, there are about 5 species that go by water lettuce as a common name.

Pistia stratiotes is the usual 'water lettuce' found in pond shops around here that is a massive invader in warmer regions, along with those water hyacinths. I've used both around a large outdoor pond to give wee frogs a place to go out in the water, I don't really like the look of them as they appear too exotic a platform to take pictures of my native frogs on.

The Amazon Frogbit you mentioned does look like little lily pads, so that might be nicer. The pond also has some slowly multiplying nativish lily pads of some sort, but I'd like more water foliage but I'd also like them to die off in the winter if they're rampant multipliers

The Salvinia natans does very well outside in the summer, and survived indoors until my goldfish predictably trashed them.

That's the larger variation. Ugly, ugly, ugly, until they bloom. But that does not last nearly long enough. I'll find the name tonight when i get home. I know i posted it in a local forum, but it would take longer for me to find via phone.

Oh, it will eventually cover the entire water's surface, if you let it. But you shouldn't have that problem if you control it from the start. The mossy's should love it, lime you said, it's natural camo. Oh, and please let me know when you let loose with your chainsaw. I need some new pieces of manzy

An will do iv already been eyeing some really twisted cool looking peaices up at the property to hack at going to use the 4x4 an pull some stumps an roots up. Idea idea idea for a tank. Lol

Oh, don't tease me woman!! I have been searching for a trunk/stump/rootball for my 125 build. I have yet to find that "perfect" piece. I want to do a downed tree spanning the length of the tank. Of course, i haven't gone for a stroll in the woods yet, it's too darned cold here!! (We "may" hit 22 here today)

Lol well I will post pics here first for all to see. I want to fill the truck bed up. Haha since we are clearing big sections anyways I don't want to see all that wood go to waste it's beautiful am in northern Cali is in such a abundance it's scary. Hoping to hot the eurika coast line over here too one of these days an get some awesome drift wood. It's been cold here as well but not that bad. Stay bundled. I hate the cold lol. Waiting for the next storm to hit so I could score on some drift wood. Going to hit Shasta lake as well for some fresh water drift wood maybe. Will see. Doing all this In the process of moving haha.

pinkfeet: I live in sacramento too. Dillons beach has some good driftwood and not as popular as other beaches so the pickings are bountiful. I got some good driftwood with some interesting termite patterns last year.
Also, If you go up to jackson or west point then I am sure you can find someone who wants a manzanita trimmed for free if you ever need more. The stuff grows like a weed on the side of the road!

But i will for sure check those places out. I go out to ferndale around the northern coast line and there are always really cool pieces and since we boght a house in redding as well an are keeping our farm out here in wilton just outside of elk grove it will be nice to go back and forth. its really nice to meet someone else on the forum from the area =o))

Most people think the 420 is for other reasons, but it is my birth date.
I know this is off topic but I live in Elk Grove. It is difficult to find people out here that know about plants and herps and when you do they typically hold themselves on a huge pedestal.
if you need some garden plants like mint, rosemary, succulents, catmint, or oregano then send me a PM. I also have a raspberry bush that I am trying to rehome since my mom hacks it to the ground every year. The raspberries are great for pancakes.
All of my plants are chemical free.
Oh and I also have some D. blaptica nymphs if you need some for your mossy frogs.

Thanks 420. I dident assume but I'm sure you get it allot. We r in Cali lol. It's just like if in Cali you go to a hydroponic store ppl generally think there's o ly one reason you would be growing in there. An coming out with lil net pots an tones of hydrotone lol. But they just happen to have the best prices an discount allot in bulk. At least the one by my house does green thumb off the 99. they have great organic soul an coco fiber. I go nuts in there. Lol but I'm rambling! Lol you are dead on with the point that it's hard to find herp ppl locally. I have only been living her for maybe a year lived in Vegas befor this an redding befor that bit born an raised in San Jose. Anyways I went to the reptile expo here an was a little disappointed but it was nice to see some friendly faces from the east bay vivarium . I deffinatly may have yo take u up on some mint an succulents. if you ever need organic gmo free hearty brown eggs I have a tone an I'm going to start clowning sone of the terrarium plants I keep an pup out sone bromeliads hopefully this year. Keep a ongoing supply for others locally an future projects. have you found there to be a big herp lover enthusiast group out here? In Sacramento area I mean?
