I thought I would put up some updated photo's of my Frogery(2meters by 2 meters). I have 4 adult Southern Bell Frogs (Litoria raniformis) in here and they are all doing very well. I was worried that they would not be eating enough but they all seem to have fat tummy's. Ive been putting mealworms and throwing in one winged flies just in case, but i think they have been eating slugs and what ever else gets in there. I love going outside and watching them basking in the sun or hiding in the hanging basket I have at the top, sorry you cant see the basket in the photo. It's funny because on a windy day the basket swings and Ive found 3 frogs in it and all enjoying a swing. They do like to sit on the shelf I have in there as well. Im wanting to get some vines growing in there eventually. If you have any suggestions on how I can improve this frogery please tell me as the more info the better.
Looks great to me. Maybe I will build one and keep gray treefrogs in it.
thats really cool i would have never thought of doing that but were my house it thee is a creek right behind my house so snake would probley come up and eat the frogs if i did that, but really awesome good job
You would have to make it snake proof, not that difficult to do.
yeah, i guess i could just get small mesh but we got clever snakes around here
Thanks Kurt and Chubb, I had this in mind for a long long time before I actually did it. Im so glad I have as I'm really enjoying the results. I actually wish I had made it bigger. It will be interesting to see if they breed in the frogery.
You're welcome.
Ooh! I LOVE it!! xx
AHH! That is the coolest thing!
that would be awesome if they was to breed in there
Very cool where did you get the plants?
Hi Tom, I got them from a local nursery, They are all NZ native plants. Im growing Bamboo in a pot outside the frogery at the moment to eventually put in when its big enough.
Thanks Katie and Spelatic for your kind words. I was worried that it may not work and be too dry or too damp. The moss does well so far and Ive been going in once or twice as week to water. I have large Moss Mounds in there that are doing surprisingly well. The lining around the bottom half of the frogery keeps the moisture in a wee bit but also allows the light in. Im just looking forward to the plants growing up a bit more.
I just had to take a photo of my Frogs sitting in the hanging basket which is in the Frogery. I thought Southerns were more ground dwelling frogs but not my lot.
Tom, Just thought to let you know that all the plants that i put in with all my frogs are lined top and bottom with sphagnum moss so the frogs don't come in contact with the soil as I just never know what could be in it.
More, Getting a bit carried away taking photo's. Sorry
Hard to believe that they are Hylids and not Ranids. They do look a lot like American bullfrogs and green frogs in head shape, which are Ranids.
Is that because my frogs look fat lol.
No, not at all. They just look way too much like a Ranid and not a Hylid. According to their taxonomic name, Litoria raniformis (Keferstein, 1867) ,it would appear someone else, Wilhelm Moritz Keferstein, thought so too.
He He I was joking. Allot of pic Ive seen of Ranids are not as lean as Hylids. I do see what you mean.
I knew you were joking, just forgot to put up a smiley face.
Kurt, I looked up Wilhelm Moritz Keferstein on the net as i was interested in what he had to say in reference to this, but I could not find it. I imagine it was in German anyway. Have you read his book?
