I have a White's tree frog vivarium that has been setup for over a year now and it is developing yellow dots/spores of mushroom things in the soil. I am not sure what this is or when it started to develop, and I am asking if it is safe to keep and means that my vivarium is healthy before I attempt to remove it. My single housed frog is not sick and is perfectly healthy as of now. He never really is on the soil and is always on vines/ water, so not much contact is figured to be ocurring. What is this and should I do anything about it_ if so, what.
Description: Vibrant yellow spores and one developed mushroom. The spores are scattered on top and among the interior of the dirt (eco earth). It appears to be growing in the shaded areas (as fungi usually does).
Can you post a picture?
Its literally just scattered yellow dots (size of dot made by pencil) with some larger spores and developing mushrooms. I can't get my iPod camera focused in on them enough so it wouldn't do any justice.
I wish I could help. I don't know if they are harmful or not. Hopefully someone else will know
This sounds really similar to some mushrooms that grew in one of my house plant's pots a few years ago. I can't really help you as far as whether or not they're harmful though. Although I can tell you that I've had a lot of problems with fungus and mold in my houseplants in the past month or so. It hasn't made it to my vivarium thankfully, but it does seem like it's going to be a very mushroomy sort of year in the east. From what I understand, all it takes are some spores to make their way inside and find a nice damp place to grow and a terrarium is the perfect place for it.
I've read about mushrooms randomly growing in vivariums before and have heard from a few people that they just leave them there.. I don't know if this is harmful to your frog though.
Do they look anything like this? Houseplant Care Guides: The Yellow Houseplant Mushroom...Eww!
