Hi,
Has anyone advice on making ExoTerra terrariums relatively fly escape proof?
There's the obvious modifications such as lining the top of the enclosure with self adhesive window draft excluder and use of glass/muslin etc. over screen mesh. But I am more interested in reducing the gaps between the opening front doors also between the doors and the fixed glass sides.
Also is it possible to 'cool' fruitflies in the refrigerator? Do they become less active but still mobile and attractive to darts?
Taking this further - is it possible to put a fly culture in the refrigerator for an extended period to limit development? And on a similar theme - what effect has cooling on cricket cultures?
CHEERS!
Hi Dylan
I saw ( but did not try) some very thin storm door weather striping - felty/fuzzy type stuff -I was tempted to try. One side was self-stick.
I don't' think it would interfere with the hinge/swing of the door function. Might not look so good. This type of product might be worth a look see. Actually, my older exo doors ( for my tree frogs ) have much larger spaces than my new purchased ones. There is quite a difference.
You could create a little "feeding station" w/in the enclosure using a piece of fruit or a small pc of fish filter foam soaked in juice. I purchased standard fish filter media-- and made tons of little slivers ( cut w /the scissors) that can just be tossed or rinsed and re-used, I suppose. FF would make a bee-line for the fruity smell and hang out there. The foam is very soft/ and would not break apart if the darts were to pick off FFs.
As for the FF in the frig??? I'm sorry I do not know the definitive answer to this.
My guess is that they would not continue to thrive in the cold temps.

I read somewhere on here to silicone the gaps around the doors then cut down the middle o it with a razor blade, it's the best idea I've read so far

I don't worry about FF proofing my tanks. Overfeeding it the largest cause of FF escapes IMHO. You will get some escapes, but I don't see it as a big deal. All part of froggin!
