I recently bought three fire bellied toads and have them set up in a ten gallon tank.
i noticed when i bought them that one had brown patches of skin on his back and eye lids. now he doesnt act sick in any way that im noticing, and he eats just fine. i was just wondering what this could be? i havent been able to find any info on the internet so far on this.
P.S. the waters brown from some eco earth falling in it by accident, there is a filter in the tank.
and i included some pictures of the set up!
Looks pefectly normal. Bombina orientalis can either be bright green or brown or a combination of either colour.
Totally normal and in my opinion fascinating. Oh and two tips; washing your Eco Earth or adding extra carbon to the filter will help cut out that tint in the water.
oh okay its good to know its nothing to worry about. someone on caudata said theyve never seen an orientalis with both green and brown pigments and i should check here. they were right
and thanks for the tip, but the way its set up is theres a stiff screen under the layer of ecoearth which in theory should never touch the water, and it wouldnt have if one of the frogs (the brown patched one actually) didnt go under the log and under the land portion and i wouldnt have dropped a big chunk in the water when trying to get him out of there.
What is the screen made of?
its actually one of those black screen covers that i cut to size and then covered with enough ecoearth that the frogs wont come in contact with the metal yet i can still easily (most of time) take it out to change all of the eco earth at will. also the screen doesnt come in contact with the water at all because of the stones underneath it lift it above the water line.
Yeah, water can still get to it and make it rust, as your substrate is most likely moist. Not to mention capillary action will bring water to the mesh as well.
