cage size and activity level

I have had my tomato frog for 3 months. It started out about the size of a quarter and now it is the size of a golf ball. It has never been active and stays hidden it it s 10 gal tank. I upgraded to a 33 gal exo terra 18 x 18 x18 and it was out all night exploring and even in it s water dish ! I have noticed the same thing with various geckos. I have put away all of my 10 gal tanks.
