    Default Amphibian UTI(Urinary Tract Infection)

Does anyone know how to treat one without going to a Vet. I realize this is unusual and I myself have never heard of a frog getting one, but of course one of mine just so happens to have one.

    Any assistance is appreciated.

Every time he urinates clumps of mucus come out and it smells like fish. It has to be a UTI.

Awe . Not sure what you'd treat with. Did you call Dr. Frye? Too bad they can't drink cranberry juice.

Are you trying metronidazole, baytril, other? Just curious in case I ever encounter this with mine.

I was given Baytril for localized injections into his arm muscle which is usually where they're given that particular injection and a Flagyl/panacur mix just in case of Protozoa infection.

Good luck! I hope it works. I'll cross my fingers for you.

I used the same medications to treat my retf rescues for their bacterial and fungal infections and it worked great. I received topical drops though.

Thank you! I'm always trying to learn more. You have taught me bundles already.

I hope your baby feels better soon!

In all honesty. I had no idea how to treat a UTI in an Amphibian. Like a few other I've spoken to including my Vet didn't even think they could actually get one. I guess we learn something new everyday.

He was not happy with his shot, but was given a worm right afterwards so I believe he forgave me.

Awe . I wonder if there's a soaking dose that would be sufficient?

I suppose it's a possibility for any excreting animal. Hopefully it will pass quickly.

I'm sure he'll forget and it will be a thing of the past once the treatments are done and over with. Except maybe the sight of a needle.

Doing the injections from behind where he does not realize you are the shot giver, may help? Just like with children. Then you get to be the good guy who saves him from the needle .

    Good luck!

I have to give him a shot once a week for four weeks. Colleen holds him while I hold his arm out for the shot. the needles are insulin needles so they're very small and shouldn't harm him much at all, but I know it does a little.

He still eats nightly so I'm sure he will be fine once the injections are over with. He's not an angry frog or mean at all so I'm sure he's just voicing is opinion of the situation quite clearly. He's a good boy

You guys are an awesome team! Seriously!

I have learned so much from you both! TY!

It sounds like he's tolerating it very well. Hopefully the time will pass quickly and he'll be feeling great and the infection will be gone. Crossing my fingers for you.

    You're welcome.

We do our beat to help everyone we can. We also hope the time goes by fast and he's all better.

He's having a soak right now and appears to be a little more active.

How did the treatment go for your frog? I have a Xenopus (African Clawed frog) and she is blown up like a michelin man and appears to have dropsy or bloat. Yesterday, I put her on a daily regimen of aquarium salt bath for 1 hour; AND 2.) soak in API Tetracycline (Gram +/-) (I wish they still made Maracyn II) for the next 23 hours of each day.

However, last night excreted an odd pus-like material coming from from her anus/tail. It is not tapeworm and dissolved soon after. My concern is that it is related ti Kidney disease. This video shows the excretion (fast forward to 0:54 seconds for the most interest):

Now, I am wondering if she has a UTI and would be curious to know what you all think would solve the issue (in addition to what I am doing). This frog means a lot to me as she is 27 years old! thanks

Welcome to the forum! Sorry for the delayed response!

A trip to the vet revealed that Malachite had a gram negative bacterial infection. He was prescribed Ciproflaxin which was given orally once a day. The infection did clear up, however Malachite passed away not too long afterwards. The necropsy revealed that he had carcinoma of the liver which can only be diagnosed postmortem. The infection was just a secondary result of the cancer.

We have since learned that mucus in urine/feces can be caused by just about anything that irritates their intestinal tract: Bacterial infections, parasites, impaction, dehydration, malnutrition/vitamin deficiencies, etc. We really need more information, but I recommend consulting a vet.

You can make a post with the frog's information here:
    Aquatic Clawed Frogs
And answer these questions so that we can better help you.
