    Default Greetings from North Texas

Hello all, my name is Laura and I am from north of Dallas.
I kept all kinds of amphibians, reptiles, rodents, livestock, and all other kinds of animals as a child. My room was basically lined with cages with a little bit of rooms set aside for a bed for me to sleep in. Recently, I have been interested in getting back into frogs. I believe I have decided to set up a tank for a whites tree frog and go from there. Thanks and see all you guys around.

    Laura,

    God bless.

Cool Re: Greetings from North Texas

welcome to the frog forum. If you cant find a whites tree frog, (I have not yet foud one in my state), might you try a little green tree frog? They are not all as personable as a whites can be, but very nice for getting into phibs again. are active, funny, and forgiving of beginner mistakes. heres a couple of my Gtfs. If you can, get captive bred, I notice that my wild caught adult stresses easily, is more shy, and took months to adapt into a happy vivarium froggy.

your little gtfs are cute. I have found several White's at pet stores, but I really want to buy from a breeder so that I know they have been taken care of and try my best to avoid chytrid. Anyone from TX know when there is a reptile/amphibian expo near Dallas??

There's one in Arlington a few times a year. I think the next one is in June or July but I may be wrong.

Welcome aboard. I have dealt with chytridiomycosis in my collection, lost my fire salamanders to it. It was a scary time, but fortunately chytrid is easily destroyed in captivity. It can be killed by bleach or by just drying out things. It can also be killed by raising the temperature for a few days. Sadly once an animal has caught chytridiomycosis it has to be treated with an expensive drug that has a very short shelf-life.

Lamisil? You just soak them in it right? Should this be done when you get a new frog just in case or only if they show symptoms?

The drug was itraconazole and the vet had ordered it orally, though soaking seems like the better idea and that's what the Amphibian Ark suggests. It was the first time my vet had ever dealt with chytridiomycosis and we had to research it together. Since then I have met an expert in the field so I can, hopefully, pick his brain for more info as needed.

Born and raised in Iowa City, IA. Now I'm in Copperas Cove TX, near FT. Hood. This town is great, it's large but has the mentality of a tiny little town.
