Biggest waste of money!

"Ruby " says Good Morning from NY



I have two tall tanks ( both 36" )
One has red eyed tree frogs (A. callidryas) the other set up for black eyed tree frogs (A. moreletii).

I have come to the conclusion that hygrometers are the biggest waste of money compared to any other supply that is a necessity.
The equipment is the same in both tanks.
The equipment for measuring humidity seems to collect, I suppose it is because of them being inaccurate!

Example--Tank one ( red eyes )

a zilla wire/ probe device...that has been stuck on 99% for about 3 months ! obviously broken ? but then, one never knows !!!!!!!!
an exo-terra wire/probe device
an open ( indoor/outdoor) wire/probe device from Home Depot
and a NEW one.......yes.......... a 4th
A "wireless weather station" .............desperate RIGHT!

Here is what they all read:
The Mist King sprayed at 7AM.
The open probe device and the NEW wireless weather station are both protected from a direct spray from the MK.

The basement / outside the enclosures is 56%

the exo reads- 76%
the zilla reads- 69%
the HD reads- 65%
and
my new wireless weather station - reads 86%


How frustrating is this !!!!!!!!!!!!

So my inclination is to lower the humidity for my red eyes, for the time being, anyway !
Winter is an entirely different mess of readings !!

The all seem pretty close in readings they may be correct. Depending on tank position in your room ventilation positions of the probes you could get different readings.... The one stuck on 99 you should remove the probe and let it completely dry out . From what I've learned on this forum humidity is important. Try a stick on hygrometer but keep the sticky paper on so you can move it around. If you didn't know already this type of hygrometer you'll need to lightly tap to get an accurate reading. Watch what way the arrow goes and that will tell you if the humidity is going up or down and I always remove mine before I spray so I don't get the backing wet. Hope this helped oh and good morning

Oh yes! The search for an accurate Hygrometer treds on
When you go to buy one always look at the readings of the others around. At least this method works for Analog gauges which I actually don't like. Choose one from a group that read the same.
I'd say to remove the gauge when the MK sprays and place it back in after. This way your probe doesn't get wet at all and just collects the ambient air moisture once back in. The only ones I've found to be accurate is the Fluker's Dual digital temp/humidity gauge. It doesn't have a probe and seems very accurate unless directly hit with water which in any case messes all hygrometer readings up completely.

The other is the Zoo Med Hygrotherm climate control units I use. They are very accurate. Usually only being off by one degree or one unit off humidity, but like all others you do not want to have the collector that's placed inside the enclosure hit directly.

Don't get me going!
It would not take much to for me to put , yet, another in there!!!!!

Seriously, they really are all pretty close to each other.
The new one is remote and updates every 45 seconds. So, it clearly explains the difference between it and the others.
The probe devices take longer to adjust.
Plus, I keep a little computer fan going nearby.

I would say the wireless weather system is probably the most accurate. Them all being close is a good thing because that means you're definitely still in the correct range even if its maybe a little less than ideal.

Being with darts 80% and higher is good, i know that if my tank has condensation on the glass then its usually in the right range. I would just use hygrometers to stick in and get a reading then take it out from now on vs leaving them in full time

I was under the impression that water droplets forming on the glass was 100% humidity

Condensation.

...occurs when a warm gas contacts a cooler surface. The gas condenses(gas to liquid).

Precipitation occurs at 100% rH.

So, condensation can happen without 100% when it touches a cooler surface.

She's not angry Morgan. She gets excited, but hygrometers being off and so many reading differently is very frustrating. Been there done that.
