Playing Dead??

Hello..
Thank you for clear my curiosity last time.

I have a new question.
A friend of mine is keeping an albino frog for a couple of months now.
A few days ago, he called me saying his frog was dead.
When he was about to clean the tank, the frog suddenly made a little
noise and became convulsive and dead! Below, this is the photo he sent me.


After a few minutes late, he called me again saying the frog was revived and hopping
around. And the frog is still alive to this date.
It seems that the frog was playing dead from his sudden approach, but do pacmans
do that? Mine has never done that. Well, since I don't want to be bitten, I put my
hand in very carefully .

And one more thing, I noticed that some experts in this forum that they could tell
the sex of the frog by just looking at the photos without looking at black dots on
thumbs. How could you tell or guess?

The frog could have been playing dead as a survival response. Remember frogs are really look but dont touch kind of pets. Inflicting stress on them by handling is not in the best interests of the frog.

Pacman frogs will flip over on their backs as a sign of stress. He was probably stressed when your friend went to clean his tank. I also see in the picture there is a superworm in with him. I hope your friend doesn't feed your pacman exclusively on superworms...

Sometimes looking at the slope of the frog's "nose" can be an indicator of the sex of the frog. But it is NOT 100% accurate, the appearance of the Nuptual Pads is.

And the paralysis can be a stress response or an indicator of neurological issues. It really is a guessing game unless you can get to a knowledgeable Veterinarian.

Also, Kitten is correct....the mealworms & supers chitin can cause an impaction and could possibly be fatal. Please also make sure that any water used in the enclosure is de-chlorinated.

You've been given great advice from the warnings given by Kitten and Jess. Flipping over on there backs is a sign of severe stress. Also lime Jess said nuptual pads are a sure sign of water the frog is male or not. Also if the frog croaks its a male.

Please answer the questions in the thread Grif posted for you, so we can help. The frog will become sick or worse if this stress or ailment continues. It's likely we can help.

The picture about is of my Bruiser. Look at his thumb locations. There are little brown pads on each. Those are male nuptial pads. They use them to hold the females while mating.

Thank you for the previous advice, and sorry for being late getting back to you guys.
Since the flip-backed frog is not in my posession, it took long time, and also my
friend is not so comfortable with English like most of Koreans. Anyway, here it is
how he keeps his frog, Jaeyoung.
1. Size of enclosure
The frog is currently kept in a small 20x20x20(cm) Acryl box.
2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences
Nothing else. Occasionaly uneaten insects.
3. Humidity
He has no idea. But he keeps spraying water in the morning.
4. Temperature
Same as above. , but the current temperature in Korea is min 18 ~ max 28,
but it is probably read around 25 indoor.
5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish
Drinking water (through water purifier)
6. Materials used for substrate
Eco Earth (Zoo Med)
7. Enclosure set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), wood, bark and other materials.
Bare, I mean water dish and nothing else.
- How were things prepared prior to being put into the viv.
He cleans with water only.
8. Main food source
Mealworm & superworms, but he changed to earthworms a few days ago, but didn't eat.
9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often)
None.
10. Lighting
None.
11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure
A Heater that I made for him out of some plumbing parts. (used untile very recently
but not used anymore) (See a photo below)
12. When is the last time he/she ate
about a week ago.
13. Have you found poop lately
a day before that.
14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)
15. How old is the frog
Not sure, but he and I bought together some time around last March. All of the pacmans are
imported from the US. So, no one knows for sure.
16. How long have you owned him/her
So, around three months now.
17. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred
Shoud be CB
18. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats
He once used crickets, but he didn't like them because of the ordor.
19. How often the frog is handled
When he cleans the box.
20. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area
In living room.
21. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc)
He is doing once a week or whenever he feels like it.
Okay, he hasn't kept any animals before including dog and cats. So, he doesn't have
any general idea of how-to's. In fact, I was the one who bought the frogs, provided the box,
a heater, Eco-earth, water-dish. So, I suppose I am the one to blame .
My frog and his frog were in the exactly the same environment (now mine is being kept in a
bigger box 30x30x30 cm since it got bigger) hardware wise, my frog is at least twice bigger than
his, and eating and pooping well, while his is not. And I have given my frog different kinds of
food like fish(tetras and platies), grubs(Protaetia orientalis) and earthworms(smaller than nightcrawlers
which they don't sell here).

I don't have pictures of my friend's frog, I attatched mine instead. Everything is the same except
mine is bigger (bigger frog and tank), and it has thermo-hygrometer in it.
