Swollen toe on my red eyed tree frog

I just noticed today that my red-eyed tree frog has a swollen toe on one of his feet. It seems to be making his leg a bit swollen as well. Does anybody know if I should try treating him with anything or just let it be?

I have only had him about a week. He is captive bred and I got him at a reptile expo. He has only seemed to eat two crickets so far. Last time was yesterday, and I have not seen much defecation. I keep him in a plastic critter keeper with paper towel and some sphagnum moss on the bottom as substrate. I have a tiny heating pad on the bottom to keep it warm and spray down the enclosure a lot. I also have a water dish and some branches to climb on. I don't handle him too often, but I picked him up today to check on him and that is when I noticed his swollen toe.

Immediately:
-remove the moss( it can cause fecal impact ion)
-leave the paper towel ( nice and damp) and shallow ( like a saucer) clean water dish w/ de-chlorinated water ( filtered or spring if you have nothing else)
-mist the cage ( not the frog) lightly - 2-3 times a day (don't douse it )
-remove the heat from the bottom and put it on the side only
-remove anything sharp ( ie branches ) from the critter keeper
-purchase proper housing for your frog asap-

As for the "swollen toe" could he have gotten burned ? Does he ave an broken skin or cut on his ---that you noticed?

A picture is very important other wise it is practicably impossible to tell what the problem is

Be sure you have the proper size crickets for him ( small is better than bigger) and dust w/ calcium and vitamins

keep him away from commotion and foot traffic
cover the sides and back of the keeper to help him feel more safe

All of these things should be in place prior to purchasing the frog --- move forward by following these instructions as closely as possible:

good the picture worked. You can see his left front food looks a bit swollen and the farthest toe seems to be the problem

Here, I'll help you out.

I was able to view the pic in the album.
Well you are right . It's his toe and the outer part of his foot.
Is the area red as well? It's a little hard to tell in the pic.
Could he have been an injury from prior to your purchasing him?

Do you see anything that looks like a bite?
Take all uneaten crickets out of the enclosure after he goes back to sleep ( in the morning)
If you should see any broken skin - post immediately.

Keep a very close eye on him.

I would throw in a couple of small crickets each night to keep him eating.
Were you able to get the calcium and vitamins to dust his food?

If you see any deterioration( increase swelling or redness ) in the area I would bring him to a herp vet. Give it a couple of days.
Search for a herp vet NOW, in your area ,so you are prepared if needed.

He looks good from what I can see otherwise.
Keep in a smaller "hospital" type enclosure for now- keep it really clean and simple.
Cover tree sides so feels safer.
A smaller enclosure will help you monitor his food intake and poop.
Plus , for now , the small quarters will help rest this foot.

I hope you have had a chance to read the care sheet!
It is very important to prepare proper housing or he will be stressed and become ill.
You could temporarily transfer him to a 10 gallon glass aquarium w/ a lid for now.
You should continue to use the paper towel substrate on the bottom until he is better and a very clean soaking dish!

Maybe it got pinched?
Does he have any difficulty walking, climbing or ie lifting himself on to the water dish?

I always went to him, now I have to drive several hours to get to one, so I am hoping this will go away on its own. I have his enclosure very simple and in a remote location where he can rest and not get stressed.

Is there anything I should put on his toe that is safe for amphibians? I can't find any vets that see amphibians anywhere near me

Yes , if the skin is broken ---- Neosporin (WITH OUT PAIN RELIEVER)
The anesthetic in Neospirin w/ pain reliever will euthanize a frog.
