is this something that you need to do with your frogs?

Do they just do it in preparation to mate?
They do not have to go through Aestivation unless you are conditioning your frog for breeding. They must go through Aestivation inorder to breed. The females produce eggs during this deep sleep cycle.
It can prolong the life of your frog if you Aestivate during the winter months usually form late November to late Febuary. As long as you maintain the proper and ideal climate in your frogs enclosure he/she will not feel the need to do so. Some will do it on their own when they sence winter is coming, but most will not.
It is recomended that no frog under 1 year of age should be Aestivated due to complications that can occur and possibly death.
