So...my lightbulb for my WTFs decided to die on me tonight AFTER all the petshops in town closed for the night. (I work at one of them, but don't want to sneak back in and grab myself a bulb.) I was lucky enough to find a 75w bulb hanging out in my garage that I can use for the night, but I am looking for any other backup ideas for future reference. My frog tank is in my bedroom and this light is going to keep me up all night...
Is there anything that I can use as a temporary fix to keep them warm until I can get them a new bulb and that won't keep me awake? I read in Barron's book of WTF care that a heating pad from a drug store can work as a heat source. Is this true? Or is Barron's lying to me? Would it be okay to use just for the night?
If only I were smart enough to keep an extra bulb on hand.
You could maybe get a UTH and keep it unplugged most of the time until you have a desperate need for it again. Though, I wouldn't see how a heat pad from a drug store would be any different. It would probably be cheaper and already comes with a temp control (while most UTH's you have to buy a separate temp control). And if you remove them from the soft cover (if you can remove them) they probably get warmer then a normal UTH. The only problem I see with them is finding a safe way to attach it to your tank bottom. I would not suggest normal tape (it would melt).
