Default Possibly urgent? Baby isn't eating and hes starting to worry me....

Baby hasn't eaten since Monday and I'm starting to get a little bit worried. I've been digging him up (as gently as possible) each night since he came home to check his eyes to be sure they dont swell up again but it seems like all he does is wait till I've walked away and then goes back to the same spot and digs down until hes almost completely covered again without even glancing at the crickets. I've tried holding the crickets in front of his face with tongs but he just squeezes his eyes closed until I take it away.

Tonight when I checked him his belly looked like it had swelled up and the skin under his mouth is loose (it looks like he has double chins). Normally I'd think I was over feeding him and he was getting fat but, like I said, he hasn't touched his crickets.

Currently hes in a large critter keeper with a UTH on one of the shorter sides. He has about an inch and a half to 2 inches of "forest floor" substrate (I think thats ground coconut fiber) with a water bowl (which he's never used unless I put him in it) and a half hollowed log. The temps are the normal low 80's in the day and high 70's at night. I mist it several times a day (roughly morning, noon, and night) and his keeper is tucked in a corner so that 3 sides are blocked from the rest of the room.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I know hes probably a bit stressed because I wont totally leave him alone but the threat of the infection coming back was just too serious. But would stress alone cause these symptoms?

(sorry I dont have any pictures. I dont have a way to take any at the moment)

Stress most definetly causes these symptoms. Pacmans will stop eating if they are stressed. How long exactly has it been since he has eaten? If he didn't eat while he was being treated for his infection and hasn't since you've brought him home that is too long. You can try a Pedialyte bath. Make sure you buy UNFLAVORED Pedialyte. make a bath that is a 10 to 1 ratio. So 10oz of water 1oz of Pedialyte. Make sure the bath is luke warm and no deeper than up to his chin.

This bath will give him much needed nutrients/vitamins/and electrolytes. Soak him for 10 to 15 minutes. The bloated look is probably due to him being well hydrated from soaking up moisture from the moist soil.

    Keep me posted.

He did eat while being treated. His infection actually dissipated before I even left work the night I took him back. He banged his head against the side of the tank and popped the bubble over his eye and all the infection drained out and he looked great. But Lori wouldn't let me take him home till he ate for her. Took him almost a week but he finally ate 2 days in a row (only a couple crickets, though) so she said she thought he was good to come home. He ate about 6 baby crickets monday but hasn't eaten since then.

I talked to Lori and the other girls tonight at work and they said its possible he may have eaten a little too much dirt with the crickets and gotten constipated. They told me to try a warm bath to try and get things moving along. Hes currently soaking in his quarantine tank while I type this. X3 I'm gona leave him soak for a bit (there is a uth on the side of the tank to keep the water warm but not hot) and take him out in about 15 or 20 minutes. When I put him in there when I noticed the infection it took him about that long to go so I'll give him some time.

They agreed that if he dosn't eat after several warm baths to try the Pedialyte but finding unflavored in my area is gona be hard. Most places only carry orange and grape. If I cant find that is there anything else you could suggest?

I never thought when I bought Baby that he would be so much....well, trouble isn't the right word I dont think. Just more maintenance then my tree girls have been, I guess. But every time I look at that cute little face I just melt and I'm like "I'll do anything to make sure your ok!" *snuggle smush*

[edit] He pooped! Hes back in his normal tank now and I'll put a few crickets in before I head to bed and see if he eats over night. And the bloated-ness probably was the moisture cuse hes even more bloated looking now after his soak. X3 But he looks a little better now so I'll give him another warm soak tomorrow. Its a little step but I'm happy he does look a bit better. ^w^

The only other thing you can do to spark a feeding responce is to keep his temp at 82 for a couple days. Warmer temps can help because their body uses heat to digest and metabolize their food.

Pacman frogs are not as easy to care for as everyone let's on. If that were the case their wouldn't be several hundred threads on here with people having trouble with getting them to eat or them being sick. Not to mention having trouble maintaining the correct environment for them. They are extremely sensitive to any change in their environment whether it be climate change or just an object that has changed and all of these thing can stressyour frog and cause him to stop eating.

Well gave Baby an good warm bath Saturday night and a warm Pedialite spiked bath Sunday night and today he finally ate! He's dug himself down in this area where water is for some reason collecting but when I held some crickets in front of him with tongs and lashed right out and took them. He didn't seem interested when they walked by on there own, though. Seems odd but he ate about 3 or 4 from the tongs so I'm happy hes not starving.

I had some of the pedialte water left over and kept it in a small container (just in case I needed to do it again soon) and I put some of that in his water dish (if he'll bother to use it since hes soaking in the collecting water where hes dug down). I'll throw that out when I get home from work tonight and put regular declorinated water in it.

He seems to be doing really well now and I'm gona leave him completely alone for the next several days (sept to refresh his crickets if he, hopefully, eats them all) so he can finally settle into his new home unmolested. I just hope I dont have to go threw this again when he outgrows the critter keeper and I move him to his permanent tank. I'm just so not use to a frog that isn't a major pig. Helly and Percy will eat there weight in crickets every day if I let them. @.@

Thanks so much again Grif! Your awesome! <3

If your frog will eat from tongs than that is actually very fortunate. Most have to be taught to do this. I would continue to feed your Pac from the tongs. Good job. Keep up the good work.

Keep me posted. You can feed your baby every night since at this stage of life they need a lot of food and nutrition. Don't forget to dust his/her food.

Oh ya. Dust. >.< I'll have to pick some more up since I returned the last batch (I think you may have seen the thread in the tree frog forum? about my "drunk" gray). Management is about 99% sure the batch was contaminated so I'll buy the other brand we sell. Its a little more expensive but not much so its ok.

And when I tried to get him to eat from the tongs tonight he refused but he refused to even try to catch them too. Maybe hes just had enough for today? I'll see how things go tomorrow. My mom and Lori both think hes just lazy and wants to be fed. X3

They do get pretty lazy, but that normal. They will not eat every night even though you should offer food every night. Just let him be and try again tomorrow.

    Keep me posted.

So once again baby hasn't eaten since monday. Is it normal/safe for a baby pac to go so long without eating?

He seems to be acting "normal" in every other sense. This morning I found him in his water dish soaking then a few hours latter he was back under his half log hiding/snoozing (and he did go in the water too, first time since his warm soak saturday). I've been offering food by tongs and just leaving it for him to go after every night but he's just not interested. I put some of the pedialite mixture in his bowl and let him soak at his leisure for a bit and then dumped it out when he decided to get out of the bath. So I guess I shouldnt be too worried because hes getting some nutrients but not really the things he needs...

Am I just being an overly neurotic mommy? X3

Try to stay calm and try not to hover over him to much. You must keep stress as low as possible. You can try another warm soak with Pedialyte. Even if you place it in his water dish it should be warm. This way his body temp doesn't drop and he absorbs the Pedialyte more easily. Keep offering food to him. Buy some red wigglers and offer the small ones to him. It is not normal for him not to eat for so long.

Crickets should be small. No longer than the distance between his eyes. Red wigglers are a small earthworm that get no longer than 3". Feed him the small ones or cut pieces off the longer ones.

Try another warm soak with Pedialyte and place food in for him to catch. Break the hind legs off the crickets so they are easier for him to get.

Do you have 3 sides of his enclosure covered with a background? If not you should. This helps make him feel for secure and hidden.

Try this and keep me posted.

The hovering thing. Ya. I need to stop that. >>

The baths are always warm. I try to make sure its just a little warm to the touch for me because I dont want it to be too hot for him. I figure if its just over my own body temperature it should be ok right?

My crickets are itty bitty. If you know, there the 10 cent ones from petsmart (11 cents for big ones). I'll see if we carry red wigglers at work but probably not. If not I'll stop by walmart tomorrow (or maybe today before work if I can) and see if they carry them. If not what about cutting parts off of regular earth worms? I know walmart has those in the fishing area. I'll set up another bath and disable the crickets and see if that works. He did seem to lunge at one on the tongs yesterday when I put him in the pedialte bath in his own tank but when he missed he just refused to try again.

Hes tucked into a corner of the room where 3 sides are blocked by other items. Is this ok or should I maybe put some dark colored construction paper around the tank instead?

I know I ask a lot its just if he is sick I only have one day left on my 14 day guarantee. I would never just up and get rid of him but if I take him back to work he'll be taken care of by Lori who is a total expert (she has, like, 3 pacs of her own) and they pay for his care. If I have to pay for his care it could cost upwards of 200-300$ for a visit because there is only one frog specialist in the area and they, apparently, think very highly of themselves. Once hes better I get to buy him back and since its at work I get to visit him daily if I wish (I did while they were taking care of his infection).

    This morning when I checked him he was out and about like a normal frog but it didn't look like he'd eaten any of the crickets I left in his tank. Maybe hes fine he just dosn't like crickets? I am NOT a fan of meal/supper worms but if the red wigglers/earth worms dont peek his interest I guess I can try them.... *shudder and gag* Ya. I know. I dont mind the crickets and actually enjoy watching them eat those so I shouldnt have a problem with the worms but, really, there just big maggots! D;

You can cut off appropriate sized pieces of regular earthworms too. I would only feed him one to 2 mealworms a week no more. Waxworms can be used as well, but they are very fattening so maybe 2 or 3 of those per week.

The water temp should be 80 degrees or a little less for his bath.

It would be best to actually place a background on the sides of the tank rather than just placing it in a corner.

    Keep me posted.

Welp got some red wigglers tonight and just tried to get Baby to eat them and still no go. Im having a hard time sizing them, though. I dig threw and try to find very small ones (most are large but quite a few are pretty small) but then they stretch out so I dont know if Baby thinks there too big or something and wont eat it. Should I take a larger one and cut it? I saw another post about how that would help him smell it and be a bit more enticed then just the wiggling mass around his mouth.

Also, we keep these guys in the fridge at work but do they have to be refrigerated? Or would a moderately cool dark place be ok? I forgot to ask before everyone left and all I can find online is about composting. And my parents are a bit "yich" at the idea of having the worms in the fridge..... X3

Also, Baby's been very active. Hes out and about hopping around his tank, using his water dish to soak, and going in and out of the half log. This is normal for my tree girls but I dont know if its normal for a pac (I thought they were fairly lazy little things). If its normal behavior should I even be worried that hes not eating?

I wish I could put up the pics I have of him tonight but at the moment I cant connect the camera to the computer. But I've got pics of several days ago and compared them to now and it seems like his color has gotten a LOT darker. Before it was a bright leafy green and now its a deep blackish green with a lighter line down the middle of his back where I'd assume his spine is and at his hips.

You can cut up the larger red wigglers as well. Try and keep his environment consistant. It is normal for younger ones and sometimes older ones to be up and about their tank. Most of the time they are lazy, but they will roam occationally. You can just leave the crickets that you removed the hind legs from in and just let him hunt them. Don't forget to dust. They change color as they age/due to food they eat/mood/and with the substrate to blend in.

    I have bad news.

I talked with Lori and she looked Baby over and we both agreed that he had lost over half his body weight since he'd been there for his eye infection. It hurt a lot (and I mean A LOT) but I made the decision that I would rather give him up then have him die from malnutrition. She said that only time will tell if he will get better and start eating or if he just had a bad bug (possibly a bit of the infection got into his system? not really sure). I decided that he needed to be with someone much more experienced then I and that is totally Lori.

I had the option of exchanging him for a different pac but 1) I just dont know if I could at the moment. I bonded with baby yaknow? Just cant replace him like that. And 2) even though everyone says there was probably nothing I could have done to keep this from happening I feel it was my inexperience that caused this and I feel I need to be a more experienced frog owner before I try just a stress prone breed of frog.

I decided to give a home to a Whites tree frog we've had for several weeks now. Tree frogs I know. Tree frogs I have experience with.

I wont give up on pacs. It may be several months or a year but I will get another pac eventually. I may look into buying an older pac that is a little hardier then the tiny babies we sell at petsmart. Thank you so much Grif. You have tried so hard to help me but it just seems that Baby was not destined to be happy with me. I've learned a lot from this experience and it has expanded my love for frogs from just the arboreal into the terrestrial and inadvertently into the aquatic too. I fear my room will start to look like the aquatics/reptile habs at work soon. X3

Thank you again and please pray that Baby gets better and someone with more experience comes along and gives him a better home then I could. I know I will pray. He deserves it.

I'm sorry, but maybe it is for the best. His battle with that infection may have caused him to become ill. You tried really hard and did the best you could. He couldn't ask for more than that. Hopefully he will recover from this and be well. An experianced keepermight just give Baby a better chance. He will be in my thaughts and prayers.

You are welcome for the help I. Provided.
