I'm so frustrated. Trying to set up my tank for red eyes. Put a medium UTH on the side of my tank (24x12x18) and can't get the heat above 60. The heater is off to the side just in case the frogs (haven't got them yet) want a cooler area on one side.
Using a "moss mat" on the bottom which has been dampened and a Reptifogger. I left the heater on all night but can't get the temperature up.
Shall I try putting it on the bottom and if I do, should I raise the tank up so there is space underneath? Will the damp moss mat cool it too much? Is there a danger of the glass cracking from moisture, even if there is space underneath the tank? Do I need another heat source? Another pad or what? Oy.
I have searched thru threads on here, and still just can't figure out what's appropriate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
How old is the UTH and what brand? Usually all the UTHs I know get WAY too hot and usually require a thermostat of some kind.
UPDATE: I got impatient and bought a new one (returning the old one to Amazon!) and it works properly. Only took 2 or 3 hours to get up to the proper temperature.
I have a dimmer ready in case it goes totally bananas over the next few hours.
