Default Bufo Frog with Eye problems

    Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum, nice work here admins and collaborators!
I am from Brazil and my wife is a veterinarian. A customer brought this Brazilian Bufo Frog with some problems with their eyes.
It seems that it has chemosis symptons on both eyes, mainly on the right eye. The left eye is without the eyelid.
Please see the pictures on my Flickr page, the forum uploader did not work for me:

Can anyone please help us save this big guy?

    Thanks in advance,
    Pedro Mazzoni

Hi Pedro and welcome to Frog Forum!

The injury looks quite serious. Is the toad behaving normally and eating properly? If it is, then there is a chance the eye injury is not affecting basic life skills. I suggest making an eye drop solution with the powder of one tetracycline capsule (aquarium type). Take a small pinch of powder and mix thoroughly with 1/4 cup (about 60 ml) of distilled water. Apply one drop in infected eye for 8 days. Make a new batch of solution and sterilize eye drop after each application. This should help control any bacterial infection.

Good luck and hope the frog's eye gets better.

Thanks for the quick response tgampper!
Answering your questions, the frog is OK and eating properly.
About the Tetracycline Capsule, here in Brazil we have 250mg and 500mg capsules. Do you now the dosage?

    Thanks again,

I would start out with the 250mg. Frogs and toads are quite sensitive to many treatments. It's good that the toad is eating well. For the most part, amphibians have a "built-in medicine chest" in their bodies to fight off many infections.

I feel really bad for this poor toad. I wish I knew more about such diseases. I do know that chemosis in birds is usually untreatable and the affected animal has to be put down. I really hope the toad recovers. Good luck.
