Default New Here! Can you help me identify this frog?

    Hey all,

Have three african dwarf frogs that I'll probably ask about periodically, but the main reason I'm here is because I want some help figuring out what type of frog this is!

I live on the outskirts of San Antonio, Texas and there are a bunch of these little dudes that come out at night. Best guess I have is Gulf Coast Toad, but I'm not 100% sure. Thought some frog/toad enthusiasts might be able to help!

    Thanks in advance!

It would be easier if you had clearer pictures but I am thinking it is a gulf coast toad. Only because the prominent stripe is more common in them then other toads in your area. For a sure identification a clear close up of the face/ top of head would help.

    This could help too

Technically they're not the Gulf Coast Toad - the toads in Texas that were known as Gulf Coast Toads have been separated to their own species and given a new name - Coastal Plains Toad, Bufo nebulifer. So you were right in your guess.

Tom - Yeah, unfortunately I only have my phone-cam, and it's always dark when I see them! Don't want to use the flash and scare them/hurt their eyes, either.

You could capture one for a short amount of time and do a photo op.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. Dave - these are what you thought they were - what used to be classified as Gulf Coast Toads. They are extremely common from San Antonio east through Texas. I used to be able to find them all around south Dallas when I lived there. They actually are a good pet toad. Johnny Farnen on here keeps some I collected for him earlier this year and they will crawl into his hand and take food from him.

The cranial ridges of this species are awesome.
