    It depends what kind of Springtails Culture they are. Tropical Springtails fare better on a substrate that is soil based mixed media. Temperate Springtails do ok on charcoal.

    Some springtails culture faster outside the tank then you seed them every so often others do just fine adding them at once. As the food for springtails waxes and wanes so will springtail numbers.
