  1. Re: Gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) lighting

It depends... Some people take their frogs out of their tanks at every feeding, but I wouldn't move them on a regular basis. They are pretty tolerant critters, but several times a week in a...
  2. Re: Gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) lighting

Hmm... That's a bit warm... I would invest in a window AC unit and cool the room down to the low 80's at least. Lighting will add additional heat, so if you use supplemental lighting (which you...
  3. Re: Gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) lighting

You aren't going to get a clear answer on the UVB issue, it's highly debated. I kept a gray for two years with no UVB and she was fine, and now I'm raising five babies without it. The need for UVB...
  4. Re: Underweight Gray Tree Frog, Advice Wanted

Actually, I think the general consensus is nocturnal frogs don't need UV lighting at all... I don't use it and have no problems with greys and whites. But you need not worry about the small...
  5. P irminia tarantula, anyone else out there have one?

So my p irminia just molted into an adult male, he's beautiful from what I can see, but I'm sad he is a male. I'm wondering if anyone out there in PA has a female and is looking to breed her? I...

Re: What Do You Feed Your Crickets?

I don't have crickets yet, but I have roaches! So for a staple they get oatmeal (which is less than ideal because phytates, but several generations later, as long as you mix things up you won't have...
  7. Re: Summer, fruit fly cultures keep crashing.

Hmm, I didn't think about the frogs... I'll have to figure out how hot it actually is, and adjust accordingly. In the mean time I have figured out how to catch and dust wild fruit flies, so my woes...
  8. Re: Summer, fruit fly cultures keep crashing.

That would make sense, as that's pretty much what is happening. I'll move them downstairs and see what happens...
  9. Re: Summer, fruit fly cultures keep crashing.

The cultures are store bought from Petco, and everything looks fine. They just die, while there is good food left that is perfectly moist. I had the same issue last year with homemade media. My...
  10. Summer, fruit fly cultures keep crashing.

So it keeps happening, and in the pet store it apparently happened as well. Any tricks out there to keep cultures from crashing? Thanks!
  11. Re: a year in the life of my Grey tree frogs. from tad to frog

You'll only know for sure if you try! I still have a bunch of tads that I believe are grays, so there still might be some left in the wild. Just make sure you collect them legally... I don't know...

Re: Grey Tree Frogs need company ?

This comes up every once in a while, and the answer is complicated. It is technically possible to do, but generally considered a very bad idea. In the wild animals are in a constant struggle for...

Re: I have baby grays! What should I do next?

Correction, found him dead, along with one other. I think I need to purge the tank and sterilize it... I removed the first corpse and left it to dry out, just out of curiosity, and it sprouted...

Re: I have baby grays! What should I do next?

I think he made it... Or else somebody ate him and another frog transformed... One of the baby frogs did die though, I guess it would be unusual for "wild caught" tads to all make it with no...

Re: I have baby grays! What should I do next?

OK guys, misting aside I have a new issue. I have six babies climbed out if the water and were transferred. Tonight I found one who appears to be full of air... He floats on his side and has...

Aww! That's completely adorable! My little guys aren't eating yet, as of a half hour ago when I tried... They did learn to change color though...

Re: I have baby grays! What should I do next?

I think I'm all set. I have a tank with moist substrate but no standing water for the babies, a transition tank for them to climb out, and obviously a tank with regular tads in it. How often should...

Re: I have baby grays! What should I do next?

OK, I'll drain the transition tank. I do have some tads in there who don't have front legs yet, right now there is about two inches of water, so I think I can lower that and still keep these tads...

I have baby grays! What should I do next?

So I have two tanks. One is full of water and tads, the other is a transition tank that is half sand/coco fiber, with some bark for hiding, that has the most mature tadpoles in it. And as of right...

    Re: Heating cricket keeper

I wouldn't heat it, it says right on the heating mats that they are for glass only, as glass conducts heat away from the mat, preventing overheating, melting, and possibly fire. Crickets don't live...
  22. Hornwort/coontail for feeders, possible parasite issue.

Greetings all. So I've stumbled across a new staple for my feeders, Hornwort. It's a type of pond weed, that gets really bushy and grows extremely fast, for those who don't know their pond plants. ...

    Re: Tadpole identification assistance

Well I collected a bunch of tadpoles from the bumper boat pond (and saved about seven adult toads that were stranded, my sister rocks for climbing in that pond by the way...). Hopefully I'll have a...

    Re: Tadpole identification assistance

Sure enough, I found some in a bumper boat pond over the weekend. There are toad TADS, and another species with the eyes on the sides of the head, it's got to be them, they've been singing at that...
