Default Just watched one of my Toads die :(

Sadly, my newest FBT passed away today, Nameko had been living with me for a few months. I sat and watched him and im afraid to say it wasn't all that pleasant, as im sure he was quite distressed even thought it took minuets. He was fed and he ate his crickets as usual, within a few minuets he had brought back up the crickets and had a little pink lump hanging from the corner of his mouth. He leapt about, then went very limp, then made an almighty effort to get going and fell on his back. After that his body heaved a few times and then his legs spasmed an he died ...

I am frightened to think he brought his stomach out with the crickets or somthing. I am rather sad about it and i shall miss his high little 'beep beep' call (his voice had not broken)

My Mum and I wrapped him up and put him in a tiny box and i shall bury him in the garden tomorrow morning. I hate losing pets no matter what they are or how long they are here

RIP my little one eyed song-ster.

So sorry for your loss Mushrooms. Yes it is sad to lose any pet.
I'm sure Nameko had the best of care and sometimes these things happen for no reason and are not anything we can prepare for.

    Rest in peace Nameko.

Bombina (orientalis) must be one of the toughest and (very) easy to keep
species in our hobby. Forgive me my curiousity, but what did you do (or didn't!)
to finish the poor bugger off so quickly!! Far too easy to just share condoleances. Tell us all about her set-up, size, temps, ventilation, lighting and water-quality...............

    regards, Han

Han she was in a 5 gallon on her/his own as he was being quarrantined from my other 3 (whom i have owned for 4 years) temp was around 22-23 C with lots of natural day light. Screen cover and daily changes of room temp spring water, cocofiber substrate with some well planted live moss, i had never seen his accidently swallow any, and i tend to watch them when they feed ... I essentially recreated everything i do for the other 3.

The crickets were gut loaded on a formula and had eaten Apple & Carrot, they were from the same place i always get them from. I've been watching the others for signs of abnormal behaviour or stress and have seen none.

The only difference has been that my dad fed them for a week when i was away but he knows how i look after them ... If you can detect anything from that which could be a clue Han i would appreciate it.

    Mushrooms,

I am soo sorry, Nameko sounded like a very special little FBT. They all become special to us no matter how many frogs we own. I know you did all you could.

So sorry for your loss. I am clueless as to what could've happened to your frog.

Sorry, Mushrooms. I would say that quarantining the frog was a good choice considering your others were doing so well. Sterilize the daylights out of that tank and the area it was in, give it to some fish enthusiast (you can get a yard sale one for a couple bucks to replace it), burn the substrate, wish you luck in the future with other acquisitions. Thank you for your responsible choice in quarantining.

Thanks, quarantining is something i never did with the others a few years ago - i knew no better. If it had not been for joining this forum and learning the absolute importance of putting a new animal into quarrantine i would have likely done the same again! I am so pleased i took the advice i found here.

I left the tank to soak in bleach then rinsed it out and gve it a scrub with some anti bacterial spray. It's currently in my attic but i think i will get rid of it.

On the upside my other 3 are still in top form and showing no signs at all of being ill, all the noisy, hungry, bouncy frogs they have always been!

It always sucks when a pet passes away, but I find it a little less devastating if there are still some other ones alive and doing well to fill the void. It sounds like you tried to give it a great life, sometimes things just happen for no reason no matter how good an owner you are. My condolences on your loss.
