Things got a little confused during feeding time tonight. Fatty, adult female gray treefrog, had nabbed a cricket from behind and was working on swallowing it. It was still alive and maybe 1/2 of the way hanging out of her mouth when Waldo, adult male gray treefrog who is a little bit (but not much) smaller than Fatty, decided this struggling cricket would be a good prey item. I mean it was upside down and rather helpless looking so I don't blame him.

At the moment he struck, Fatty decided to help the cricket down her gullet with her hand. Waldo, whose aim is normally impeccable, ended up with a mouthful of hand, and had Fattys hand in his mouth nearly up to the wrist. At this point I was somewhat concerned and opened the cage and put two fingers on Waldos shoulders and gently pulled him back. Happily he released her hand and everyone seems ok.:)

So... does this sort of thing happen often and would it likely have sorted itself out if I hadn't intervened? It looked like an honest mistake by Waldo, but I'm not sure he would have stopped trying to swallow on his own, and this seems like it might have been bad for Fattys hand/arm (he surely couldn't get much more in). I know multitudes of people feed groups of frogs together everyday, so many body parts must end up in mouths they don't belong. I've just never seen it happen, so give me some reassurance!

I just got my green tree frog out of her cage to clean her, and when I looked at her, she was bleeding on my hand. I looked at her hand, and her front right one is very puffy and red. She was fine last night, it wasn't like that at all. I have no idea what I can do to help her, or even what's wrong for that matter. Can someone please help me?

Today I had Baby outside in it's tank and decided to let he/she get some fresh air. I put the Babes on a plant on the deck for a while and it's incredable how much better he/she is looking. Here is today's pic 9/6 (far right) on the plant and the last pics 8/28(far left) and 9/4 (center). When I finally brought Baby in he looked like the 1st pic, which is why I brought Baby in to care for. When he/she was very thin, he/she was also very dark..from dark green - black. Now since he/she has been improving and eating the color has remained lighter and greener..good sign, I think. AAAAWWWW Baby just pooped on the leaf, must be eating enough for that..LOL

This morning I heard a faint, crackley, "croaking" sound coming from the Terrarium with 4 "female" PCF's. I have never heard any croaking sounds before.
When I looked Pako's white throat was slightly ballooned out, but it was still white. Do females do this? Or could it have been Alto the "female" behind her. Alto is starting to look more "male" as she matures and gets bigger.

Here are some pics I took this morning. What do you think?

Hi...I am debating whether or not to let my grays hibernate. I would like to breed them and I read here that if you want to breed then you need to let them cycle, hibernate. What are the pros and cons of hibernating vs not hibernating other than the breeding, and if I did choose to hibernate can I just set them on the porch in a critter keeper with soil in it? and the care sheet says to stop feeding them in october and after 2 weeks then start the hibernating...I live in Ohio so it should be cold enough come mid october november to put them outside for hibernating right?
I would miss them terribly while they hibernate :(

I've had these guys now for almost a month and they are all doing very well. I can't get over how fast they are growing though. When I took these froglets in they were mostly about 1/2" and some weren't even 1" yet and now most are at least 1" and very, very chubby..just they way I like my pets( you should see my bunnies..Whoa!).
After their dinner last pm I took several pics of most of them who were more cooperative. The larger ones, which I have had longer, are very calm and when I scoop them up for dinner they jump on my hand...I really think they know now that this means it's dinner.
Because I was side tracked over the 2..now 1 tiny froglet that's not doing well, I almost forgot it was a feeding day. I am feeding them every other day and they eat better this way. I passed by their "house" and they were all in view, very odd for them to be seen and bouncing around, and I then realized it was time for their dinner, but they knew for sure. When I was watching them in the "dining room" container and they were stretched out and moving around, I could really see how large they've gotten. I am very happy to see that they are doing so well.
However, there are 2 smaller ones , that for what ever reason, are not eating as much or at all, still look ok, but thin. Since I have another "dining room" container set up with fruit flies, after I took out all the frogs that ate like piglets with crickets bulging out their sides(looks really freaky) I left those 2 in the cricket container for a while. I thought possibly they were intimidated or bullied by the larger froglets. I usually watch them eat and I don't see much fighting or problems, but I am not well versed in frog lingo and gestures to know it for sure. After a 1/2 hour or so they still hadn't gotten any crickets so that's when I took them out and dropped them in the fruit fly container.....and then success. I had to actually get more fruit flies for them they ate so many. Very happy to see them eat, glad I had the fruit flies.
When can I determine their sexes? I am not going to name them until I have a better idea of which sex they are and more importantly get to know their personalities and quirks.
Right now I have 9, but I don't think I will keep all of them. I am waiting to see how they adapt, eat or don't eat, etc. The ones that don't seem to be thriving in captivity I'll let go.
So here are a few pics of my growing babies. I can't fit all the pics so I'll continue on this thread.

We'll I knew this was going to happen, but Baby's friends, we finally named Tiny, died:( Day before yesterday, Tiny actually looked better, ate lots of bugs and even pooped!! Then yesteray early feeding Tiny didn't eat much, then in the late feeding (since I got the Friut flies I've been feeding then 2x's daily) was sitting on a leaf when I was taking him/her out and then disappeared....I found Tiny sprawled out on the bottom upside down and.....definately dead. So sad.
Baby perked up yesterday and was eating bugs and pooped too!(interested what you'll talk about w/pets and children) I had Baby outside in it's tank and seemed to perk up..hot and humid, so I put the tank under a table, made sure all was safe and secure and left him out last night.
Baby is stuck to the side of it's tank and I am scared to touch him yet. When I saw Tiny he/she looked alive so it was quite the shock.
I finally got the fruit flies and now he/she dies!!! I think they just went too long without.
Tiny's been in wake all night, 1. too make sure he absolutely dead and 2. until I figure out what to do with the little guy..they don't make coffin's for small frogs.....maybe they should!

Hey All,
I'd appreciate if you could ease my concerns a bit. Tonight while misting my terrarium I heard something making noise that sounded kind of like a dog's chew toy. I nearly jumped out of my skin because so far my white's has not made a peep. My question before I scour my room for another hidden critter is what do young white's sound like? All the videos on youtube of white's call show much bigger older frogs so I'm not sure if this is a good basis to judge from. Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Hello everyone! It has been a long time since I have posted anything, but I have been following the forum. I did have a questions today, my Whites is over a year old, and eats well. But latly, due to the heat, the pet store has had trouble with their cricket supplies. I have had to get baby crickets a few times. He ate them well the first time, but now, when I am forced to get small crickets he seems to take great pleasure in squishing them. He will eat a few, the he starts jumping on them. He doesn't do that to the larger ones, and will eat as many of them as I will let him. Is this normal behavior?

Thanks for any answers in advance!

This morning, when I checked Mercutio's viv, he was gone! After 20 minutes of sifting through the substrate, plants, and nearby furniture, I caught him on top of the TV. He almost gave me a heart attack with that stunt! My heart is still beating really fast. After I found him, gave him a bath, and stuck him back in his cage, I duct taped all of the edges of the plexi to prevent further "field trips."

In other related news, I watched him shed last night. That was SO COOL!!!

Mercutio loves climbing the glass.

I am so frustrated:mad:....I ordered fruit flies from Josh's Frogs for the babies I've been trying to save (the whole story is posted under froglet saved in a bucket of water). I've been doing Pedialyte baths and offering them very small crickets and wax worms daily, but nothing. Last night I was so desperate I put them in the window above my door by the light to try to catch the few bug that are there. They did grab a few but are so weak kept falling off, falling 8-10 feet or more. I picked them up several times, but after the 3 time for each they didn't look so well so I brought them back in. Before I put them in their tank I gave them another bath and prayed the fruit flies would be here today, but nothing! I keep checking online tracking who as of today says I received them this am at 9:05, guess what I didn't get them! Now no one seems to have any idea where this package is or where it was delivered and the USPS rep said they will call me in 2 Business days. So now I have to wait until Monday!!!!!! I really can understand why people go postalar15 if this is how they operate. Sorry for the therapy session, but I've tried so hard to save these frogs and this really sealed their fate and it's a shame.

Hi all,

Im new to this forum, and dont yet own any frogs.

Recently, I've been doing research into keeping frogs, and it seems 3 commonly come up as easy to keep for beginners like me - white's tree frog, the horned frog, and fire bellied toads.

I nearly settled on keeping a horned frog, and even found a green horned frog I liked the look of in a shop, but seeing WTF and the titular amazon milk frog in the flesh has made my decision harder. The sales guy who was helping me told me that his first frogs were milk frogs and they weren't hard to keep at all

Does anyone have any experience with milk frogs? Do they need to be kept in pairs for company? I have found one caresheet here: Amphibian Care >> Amazon Milk Frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) Care
From what I've read, they are somewhat similar to WTFs, but I'd rather get some first hand experience.

My only concern is whether they will disturb my sleeping, as I need to keep them in my bedroom.

I would look at getting an exo-terra enclosure no matter what frog I bought, which size is most suitable for tree frogs? 45x45x45cm? (~20gallons) 45x45x60cm? (~26gallons) bigger? At these kind of volumes, size definitely becomes an issue for me.

Thanks for reading,

So, where to start. :P After Kibbits finished all his antibiotic rounds and was in quarantine for two months - the vet said that it was something...

So, where to start. :P After Kibbits finished all his antibiotic rounds and was in quarantine for two months - the vet said that it was something genetic going on, not viral/bacterial/fungal (remember we did cultures and biopsies trying to save him). At this point, we knew we were going to lose him and put him back in the tank to live out his last few days in a good place. He gained his vitality back, moving around and jumping, and mostly following Igby everywhere she went. I took pictures of him "sleeping" on top of Igby while she was soaking in their pond. As you know, he passed away a week ago, and after he did, we noticed some changes in Igby. I attributed it to "losing Kibbits." She was spending all her time in the water (uncharacteristic).

HOWEVER, today, we looked into the tank and saw Igby out of the pond, and in her place....there are about dozen white sacs. Could these be WTF eggs!?! I was always under the impression that it was very hard to get them to breed!

It's just so strange to have taken pictures of what I thought was Kibbits delight at being near his friend again (by constantly being on top of her)....and now we're finding white sacs in the water about ten days later.

Does this match up? If these are eggs, what should we do? Two of the sacs are larger than the others that are trailing behind them on a long strand, like an itty-bitty string of pearls.

If they are, here are some tank stats to help: the "sacs" are currently in the water feature side of our tank in about inch-deep water above a tree/rock formation in the water. Water is treated frog water (filtered with reptisafe), and the pond runs on a filter system through a waterfall. Day-time heat is about 80 to 85 (ranging from the cool side to heater side). Water is on the cool side. Night time ranges from 75 to 78 (since it's SO hot right now, we're having a hard time getting our apartment below that :P). Humidity ranges from 50 to 70%, with a steady 50% at least because of the water side.

Igby has been eating well. No skin changes, etc., outside of the fact that she was sitting in the water for about a week. She's not doing that now. What do you think!? Could Kibbits have impregnated her before passing away?

We will post pics as soon as we can figure out a way to safely photograph them without disturbing them.

It always seems like we have posts on "My frog won't eat" or "my frog is sick". Well, I would like to start a thread about a more chearful subject. If anyone has had their frog do something just really weird. For example, my Red Eye Leaf frog while slowly walking from one branch to another missed his footing, slipped and then hung upside down for about 5 minutes by his ONE back foot. He was all stretched out trying to reach different branches but couldn't reach them. (where's the video camera when you need one) He eventually let go and fell into the water area and immediately jumped out onto a leaf. He looked a little embarrassed. So let's hear some funny frog stories.

Feeding Tank or Feed INSIDE the Tank? WTF Advice Please : )

Hey guys! So, for the last year, we were feeding our WTFs inside their tank, i.e. every other day, putting in about six large crickets. These guys would usually sit by the glass knowing feeding time was coming and catch them as they were put into the tank.

However, once Kibbits got sick, in order to better monitor Igby (as well as Kibbits from his quarantine tank), we were feeding in a separate "feeding tank." We wanted to make sure, of course, that Igby was still happily eating, as suggested by our vet.

Now, since Kibbits has unfortunately passed, I've continued to feed Igby outside the main large setup (an elaborate 35 gallon). On Saturday, we brought home another new WTF, and we've been doing the same with him so we can monitor his eating as well.

So the question is this: do you think pulling them out of their normal enclosures to a cleaned "feeding tank" is too stressful for the little guys? I just feel bad handling them so much in order to transfer them (we do use cleaned, frog-water treated latex gloves, so we aren't touching them with skin-to-skin contact), but I also feel like being able to monitor their feeding habits, keep the main tank/temp tank cleaner without crickets being able to burrow or hide, etc., is really beneficial - especially after losing Kibbits since I feel like had we been doing this, we would have noticed his decrease in appetite a lot sooner.

What do people think? Do other WTF/frog owners do this as well, feeding in a separate tank? Is it too stressful for the frogs? Igby (and Kibbits) didn't take to well to "tong-feeding." Suggestions/advice would be great. We just want to make sure that we make the right decision having this temporary tactic (until we know that Igby is out of the woods) turn into a more permanent approach.

Hi everyone!

Alright. So let me introduce myself briefly before I go into questions that I hope you will all have wonderful answers to. My name's Linda, I own a 5 year old Mexican Red Rump Tarantula and a 12 year old Red Eared Slider that I have had since I was 11. Exotic animals are my passion on account of I am allergic to anything with fur. (Though I love all animals with fur, I just can't own any!) Anyway, I was looking to expand my happy little family and did research for a few months before I decided that I would love to own a White's Tree Frog. (2, actually.) I was going to order online, but I went to a local pet store and saw a beautiful green one that I fell in love with right away. I bought him on Wednesday and have now had little Apollo for a few days.

He stayed that bright green color until I got him home. He's been a dark brown ever since Wednesday and has not moved from the back corner of the tank. I know he must be moving around at night because his water bowl is dirty in the morning. He's eaten about 10 crickets since Wednesday but even at night he just doesn't seem very happy. I want him to feel content in his new home and I just want to make sure that this transition process is normal and that he isn't sick OR that I'm not doing anything wrong.

The temperature I currently have the tank at is around 80 during the day and 70-75 at night. The humidity ranges between 50-70%, depending on when I mist it. When I took a picture of him the first day, I noticed a weird kind of vein thing and I wanted to make sure it was normal since I hadn't noticed it in White's Tree Frog photos before.

I don't know if you see the little line thingy, kind of looks like a sore. But I might just be looking too much into it.

That's Apollo's favorite little spot to sit in. All day. Every day. I noticed that when he ate crickets he got some of the dirt in his mouth, so I covered it with moss.

I hope I'm not being too paranoid, but I just want to make sure all is well with him. I plan on getting another White's Tree Frog at a Reptile Show next week so he can have a friend. Any idea why he's not that pretty green? Is he depressed? Is it the environment? Too much humidity? Let me know!

Thank you guys so much! I appreciate any feedback you can give me.

Hello all - it's been a while since I wrote. As you all know, we've been fighting to save little Kibbits for over two months now; unfortunately, Kibbits passed away last week. After numerous vet visits, cultures, and biopsies, and multiple rounds of antibiotics and shots, we just got a point where there was nothing else that we could do : (. The vet did an amazing job trying to help us fight whatever was making him so sick, but we just couldn't figure it out in time, even with all the tests we had done : (. We are going to miss him terribly and are very broken-hearted about it.

Though it was hard to think about the "next step" so soon, we were so sad for our remaining frog, Igby, being all alone. She's already been alone for two months (since Kibbits was in quarantine). So on a cheerier side, we found a reputable breeder (Josh's Frogs - they were amazing with us), and picked up new 5-month old WTF today to start the quarantine/transition process. Given the long quarantine process, we wanted to start as early as we could so she'd have a friend.

This is the first time we've gone through the process of transitioning a new frog into a tank with an older frog. The question I have is this: beyond the quarantine time (to make sure everyone is healthy), how long do we need to wait to make sure the new frog isn't in any danger because of the size difference? Quibble (the new frog) is 1.5 inches, and Igby is about 2.75 inches. Thanks!!

I havent posted for awhile and it is too bad it wont be on a good note. Hyla my gray tree frog is asleep right now and it is 11:30pm, not normal. Last night she ate three dusted crickets and appeared fine. I just checked on her for the first time this evening and it looks like she was in her water bowl at some point but now she is sleeping soundly in her log. Should I be concerned at this point? The only other behavior change I have noticed lately is an increased appetite.

I had thousands of Gray Tree Tadpoles in my pool, which have now left and have taken over my yard. I took in 8 froglets and now I believe 1 to be a spring peeper. When I catured it, it was raining and the froglet was wet, but was about the same size and closely resembled the Gray tree froglets. After the froglet dried and was sitting still in the tank I noticed it wasn't a variation of green or gray, but tan/brown, and had slightly different features than the others. It's body is more narrow and not as chubby as the grays and it's head is slightly longer and more narrow. It also lacks the white under the eyes. There are peepers in this area and I have seen them, as adults, on my front door, but have never seen them as youngsters. Will this be a problem if I keep them in the same enclosure? So far there doesn't seem to be any problems, nor any frog on frog aggressiveness. They have ample space and adequate foliage to hide and relax within the tank. During feeding time, in the container I've dubbed the "dining room", there is plenty of food, everyone is eating and there to are no fights or dominating, I can see, and I watch them the entire time they are in the container. I can't find the questionable froglet for a pic, but I am pretty sure thats what it is.

So this is a frog I have though was awesome since I was a little boy. I have over the last few years seen them become avalable to the public and actually somewhat common on reptile classified sites. 1. Are people breeding them in large numbers now or are all of them WC?
2. What kind of care is required for this species?

I am about to purchase a 1.1 pair of T.Cortical (Vietnamese Mossy Tree frogs) The seller says he is a snake breeder and isnt 100% sure its a pair but 90% sure. He has sent me pics of the mossys in question (they arent the best pics) I'm just looking for second opinions.

So, our whites which I thought was sick with red leg or something was out and about tonight. And I heard it call a few times. Searches online said only males call, and a magazine says females do too sometimes. Ours called twice about 30mins appart for about ten seconds or so.
