This is the place to celebrate right? (No they aren't feeder animals. >_>)

Story time! So an acquaintance of mine bought a male mouse she named "Bananas." She tamed him and kept him in her room but didn't expect the smell carried by most male mice. I overheard her wondering how to bath a mouse and I immediately told her I had shampoo for such a thing (She was going to use dish soap so I figured my guinea pig shampoo HAD to be better then that.) and asked her why she might need it. She said she bought a male mouse and that it smelled terrible. She was saying how she was thinking of releasing it if she couldn't get the smell off. I didn't want it to die so I offered to take it off her hands.

What I didn't expect was his friendly disposition. Every day when I went downstairs he would run to the top of his house and stand on his hind legs sniffing for me. When I put my hand in he immediately runs over to it instead of shying away and even lets me pick him up. I have had many mice in my life but this one still amazed me. Half the time when I give him a cheerio he doesn't even eat it immediately because he's excited to see me.

Strange as this sounds I felt a need to repay him for the way he brightened my day so I bought/gave him a mate. Of course I had to separate them right before she gave birth and I obviously can't let them be with each other again unless I'm prepared to care for 20 newborns but hey! Now I have baby mice. :D

My last mouse to have babies only gave birth to six, but this one had ten! surprisedfrog (The mate's name is Butterscotch. She's the yellow mouse hawking over the babies even though there are no mice or predators in the cage.)

I need to stop going into pet stores!!!

Yesterday I was at a small non chain pet store. I have been going there for some time now, they specialize in mostly fish, customizing and building tanks/terrariums and stands.

They have a small reptile area on the upper level and I made the mistake of looking. They had some unhealthy set ups and equally unhealthy looking animals. I tried to very politely explain a few things to a person working there but he seemed to not care too much.

Today I went back and volunteered to work in their reptile department. I asked if I could make a few changes in their enclosures to help make the animals happy/healthy. The owner was thrilled by my suggestion and said he welcomes all the help he can get.

My first project was their Basilisk enclosure....or should I say bare mesh cage with tiny water dish. I gave this guy tons of things to climb, a giant water dish, and most importantly a UVB bulb and basking light. Unfortunately this little guy was dropped off at the store a few weeks ago by someone who got bored with him. I am almost certain it is blind, and it has signs of MBD. The proper lighting and environment will help and hopefully they will listen to my suggestion to take it to a vet.

Next came the Bearded Dragon cages...those bare cages were decorated with logs and hides and a basking area. They were also given UVB and heat lamps.

Finally there was a Veiled Chameleon that broke my heart. He was in a tiny planted terrarium with nothing to climb and no lights. His only source of water was a dish...but chameleons dont drink standing water. His urates were orange which means he is extremely dehydrated...and his thin body was a dark brown color. I spent a really long time describing the care this cham needs...I offered to take the cham home and try to hydrate and fatten him up. The owner was so happy I offered that he didnt even ask for a deposit or contact info...so now I have another unhealthy animal that I am trying to save.

I really need to stay out of pet stores from now on. Last time it was a budgett's frog that lived in a cricket keeper filled with dry dirt, and now this Chameleon... I plan to go back to the pet store once a week to help care for the many reptiles. I only had a chance to work with a few today but hopefully next week i can tackle the 4 week old Bearded Dragons on sand.... *cringe!*

Just before I shut of the light for the night, I happened to catch a rather amusing sight. One of my second generation male cockroaches had wedged himself between the water dish and the side of the tank. I thought he was stuck and was going to help him, until I realized he was actually quite comfortable "sitting" there and cleaning his antennae. He looked like he didn't have a care in the world. Must be nice to be raised with fresh food and water and no predators, eh?? The pictures don't quite capture the humour of it, but here they are:
