Hello, forum!

It's been about two and a half months since I got my Pac-Man frog (name: Birdo) and everything seems to be going smoothly. The frog eats every two or three days and appears to be doing quite well in its ten-gallon enclosure (filled with coconut husk 'n' tropical soil).

However, I've noticed a rather peculiar behavior that arises typically when my frog is startled. If I go to move him (gender assumed to avoid frequently using "him/her" and "his/her") or dig around him, he shoots a jet of liquid out of his backside. Today, it only took to my coming into the room rather quickly and it triggered the behavior. Is he voiding his urinary tract? Is it a defense mechanism? I've tried doing online searches, but they've yielded nothing on this sort of behavior.

I appreciate any feedback; I really ought to post this forum more often [guiltyface]

Hey!
So I've had my pacman for about a month now. Recently i went out of town for a night, and came back to him flipped over. Its been about a week and he flips over every night. I tried leaving the heating pad on the side of the cage, cleaning it, misting more.. Nothing seems to get him to stop. He has only been eating meal worms, but since the last week and the flipping he hasn't been eating. Hes small, only about 2 1/2 - 3 inches. What could it be?

I see people have posted this in other places, and no one seems to know. I even called 2 vets, and they say they never heard of it. Is it that rare?

Thanks in advance!
I would love to make it a staple along with dubia roaches. I remove all the dirt off the worms before feeding. I use hemostats to drop the worm in front of the pacman. The wet sticky worms end up getting covered in cocco coir while he is eating them. Im useing the fine coco coir. Do I have to worry about impaction?

Hi yall, something very weird happened last night while feeding my pacman... my pacman got a good grip of the red wiggler as soon as I dropped it in, and while I was watching my pacman, I realized that the worm slowly escape from my pacman and there was little bit of juice coming from the red wiggler. After the initial encounter, I removed the worm and try with meal worms and no luck, all he does for the following half hour is moving his mouth. And when I look it up on Wikipedia today, I came across this: "When roughly handled, they exude a purgent liquid, thus the specific name fetida meaning foetid. This is presumably a defense." With that said, could it be the reason why Pacatron is moving his mouth for about an hour after the initial contact and no longer interested in his prey? And should I get earthworm instead of red wiggler instead?

I bought a small green pacman frog today at a reptile expo, and I don't know anything about them. The guy that I bought it from said that I can just use wet paper towels for bedding (although I put a bit of moss in there), feed them once a week, and I don't need a light on the cage that room temp. is fine. Is this true? Also, if anyone has any other advice or tips about taking care of pacmans, that would be greatly appreciated :)

Guys, I'm torn between whether I should feed my pacman plain crickets or plain worms? I am leaning towards worms on this because:

1) easier to store, I do not need to purchase another box to house them
2) cheaper, since I only purchase 10 crickets at a time, and it costs about 10 cents / cricket, worms would be cheaper if I order online
3) easier for the viewing the frog eat, worms don't move as quick and gives me time to look at the feeding process.

What do you guys think?

Hello,
How often are you supposed to give a pac man frog calcium and vitamin supplements? I have a 2" juvenile ornate horned frog that I've been feeding mostly red worms and some crickets, dusting every other day or so, half reptical calcium and half herptivite powdered vitamins, as per the instructions on the container. He's been doing great, just haven't been able to find much advice as far as to how often you're supposed to dust his food. Thanks lots, should post a pic soon :)

Wanted to get some ideas on this. What do you guys feel are the possiblities of setting up a more permanent enclosure for a Cornuta? Kind of like a dart set-up, where you could incorporate hydroballs and soil that would allow adequate drainage, a natural pond and live plants? You think this would be successful? Since they primarily camp out in one area and prefer it damp and humid, I feel that this could be possible. Your thoughts???

Well after a week of watching my suriname horned frogs' health dwindle, i traded my frog today, kinda sad i guess, but shes probaly in better hands considering the person i traded her too breeds cornutas, and even he believes the frog is in bad shape and most likely infested with parasites, he made alot of good points to me after comparing her now to her original stock photo, the good news, even though most people may think i made a bad trade, is that obtained a vicious little fantasy frog that was just recently breed and he had a nice little batch and was allowed to make a pick of my choice, i guess the rest are being wholesaled out in a few weeks, after looking through dozens of frogs, some green some red and some a mix, he must of thought i didnt seem to interested, or somthing, even though i was very interested, just the first time i have seen these frogs in person, and some of the mostly green ones caught my eyes, anyways after quietly observing all of them for a few minutes, he decided to pull one out that he personally picked out just to keep as a pet, and this thing acted like a little pitbull, he pulled its enclosure out of his nice rack system and here was this little frog jumping at the side of this bin like was intruding onto its territory, went to pick it up and observe it and the quick little booger lunged at me, after further inspection, this frog was definatly one of the biggest of the bunch, and had some odd coloring compared to any of the other frogs, almost like a washed out color, like you would see in a ghost phase snake, outside of the obvious suriname appereance , it had larger horns then most the others, and inside this ghostly grey of color had some red and pink that really stood out on the grey background, not sure if this may be a common color for these, but this definatly stood out compared to the others, he stated he had been breeding these frogs for years and had only seen one other fantasy like that which his father now keeps as a pet, but he also breeds cranwellis, ornates, and cornutas, and also mentioned he has had some almost fully translucent cranwellis in the past that sold for nice chunks of change, anyways after 5 hours of driving i got my frog home and settled in and it has already put down two crickets, i kinda feel bad as i dont condone trading what i feel is a sick animal and may die, but i guess it isnt to bad as he contacted me and offered the trade, and once there seemed more eager to get the trade done, either way just happy to have a fat little frog with personality galore, wish nikon would just honor there waranty and fix my camera so i could post some quality pictures, either way ill have a few posted in the coming days

Hi guys, two days ago I dumped roughly 15 crickets (5 extra, courtesy of the reptile store owner) into the tank, and so far roughly 7 has died off. So my questions are: 1) can it be due to heat? Because the weather in North Cal suddenly went so hot that both the pacman tank and my gold fish tank's temperature are high. 2) I did not leave them any food nor water, could they starve to death because of this?

Many thanks

This is the best picture I have on my phone. I will try to get a better one. He's a little bigger since that picture was taken, and lately has had a huge appetite.

I got the frog last July, and he was a few weeks old or maybe a month. I can't remember. He was small that's all I remember.

He mainly eats earthworms with crickets every now and then. I feed him in that dog bowl, so please don't think he stays in there all the time. I just don't want him investing any dirt or moss, and I don't want worms burrowing in the substrate if he doesn't eat immediately. Although, It doesn't take long for him to eat, sometimes it can take a minute.

Hi guys:) I'am new at the forum, actualy I only register here to do this question...eheh
But I realy like the forum, and the people seem nice;)

(Sorry the bad english...)

Enough with the talk:D
Some time ago, I ask a friend of mine to buy me a Pac man at "Expoterraria" (a spanish animal expo) and some days later he shows me with this:

A little green pac man!:D Just what I wanted...eheh
But with the time, and when I gotted it, he turned like this:

At first I though that was the effect of the stress, because of the 1:30 hour trip (he stayed at my friends house 1 month or so...)
But he stills brown today, 1+ month later...he eats very well, and I only bother him when is feeding time...

Well, my big question is if pac men can turn to other color when young...

Heres a more recent photo (with flash)

And a gross photo...eheh:D

Many thanks;)

He is eating and deficating like a champ i fed him his first pinkie today which he seemed to enjoy very nicely. I was just wondering if this is an organ im seeing through his skin because his is albino. Or is this something i should worry about.

Well my new suriname arrived today, she seems pretty stressed out, opened up the box and it was quite warm actually, like almost 90 degrees warm, she was shipped out last night at 8pm and arrived today at 1pm, not bad for standard ground shipping, ups truck must got warm, and temps werent to bad out doors, anyways when she arrived she seemed asleep, not sure if just being trapped in a box for 18 hours had anything to do with it, but hopefully the temps arent sending her into estivation, i scooped her out of the beak moss she was sent in and she seemed quit stiff and lifeless but you could feel her breath and see those cool eyes flick in then out, i placed her into a burrow i had made for her in the eco earth, and she laid there stiff and still , i went a grabbed a worm from refrigeration and waved it in front of her face for a second and she came to life a little, opening her mouth a little bit at it and flicking those horned eyes in and out, anyways im gonna leave her be for the day and may try to take some pic tomorrow to post, this is the first time receiving a frog overnight and just wondering if this is common, ive had alot of fish ship overnight over the years with a few problems, at least forums like these are available to gain advice from others experiences

I know this is not the freshest topic on the block, but it had been 2 days since Pacatron last ate (he ate @ the petstore)... my tank's humidity is around 80 and the temp. is around 80 during the day and 70s during night time... I had been trying to feed my pacman the can-o-crickets but still no luck... I still haven't try live crickets yet... I am also thinking earthworms, what do you guys think?

This is the first frog for my gf and I, we both had been doing assignments on our end before we bring Pacatron home, I really want to make this experience a positive one... thank you for you guys' help, I really appreciate it!

Nightcrawlers are great but other than that, what's big enough? We have 7 and I personally don't have the time to sit there with tongs and put 30 mealworms one by one in front of their faces.
Do they eat silkworms and other large caterpillars?
Thanks in advance,

Ok Lucas finally came out after being completely buried for 5-7 days. I was soooooo excited because I got to see him chillin out in his water bowl.. Well first he got stuck in the corner so I used my tongs (the flat nonpointy end) to gently scoop under his belly and push him into his dirt. (he puffed up it was cute :) ) but anyway.. Since I keep his water up to his mouth the top of him is not getting clean.. He has dirt on his eyes and stuff.. I guess it's not bothering him but I don't know if it's a bad thing.. And also I figures since he had been buried for soo long he would attack anything (hence why I didn't pick him up) but I put a cricket down and he didn't eat it.. He usually eat one superworm abd about 3-5 large crickets.. Now I'm wondering if he was full from last time? He ate 6 dusted crickets.. But.. I don't know.. He started to burry himself Right under the heat lamp but I didn't know if that was good.. So I gently gave him a tap and he bounced back to his normal shadowy hiding spot and cuddled in and is the process of burying himself.. Is this normL!? Or am I being an over protective paccy mom?

Hey guys. This might be more preemptive than anything, but because I'd rather be safe than sorry. After just going to check on my new Pacman frog, I noticed that he was deeper in his bedding than usual. Okay, no problem. The other thing I noticed is that the red on his head (the bright red which is why I decided he was nicer than the other frog I had a choice between) was way duller than it had been. It was as though he had dried out, although his water bowl is there and I had misted earlier today. I attempted to mist him directly with a gentle spray and nothing happened. I can see him still breathing by his throat movement and although he was not interested in a second worm for today, I wasn't surprised since he basically ate a five inch nightcrawler today (he himself is slightly larger than a quarter). Is this anything to be concerned about. I turned off his lights for today (both the incandescent and flourescent) since I am about to go out and will be checking as soon as I get home. Any tips or help would be great. Thanks alot guys.

I am finally lucky enough to find a suriname horned frog, unfortunately its like 100 degrees here the rest of the week so i won't probably see it until the heat breaks, atleast it gives me sometime to make some adjustments to its enclosure and learn a little bit more about this species, i've found out quite a bit about this species by doing a little research online and reading the forums here, but i guess id like to learn more from members that keep these guys on this forum, i have experience with a cranwelli horned frog as i have been keeping one for a year now with no problems and i guess wondering if my green pacman setup would apply to the suriname horned frog i will soon be keeping, i keep my green pac man in a 10 gallon with a heater stuck to the side, and it watering hole is on the heated side, substrate is 2/3'ds eco earth and a third scottish moss, i keep the eco earth saturated with water and keep the scottish moss not so saturated, but fairly damp, under the substrate i have a two inch layer of peat and top soil mix, and under that i have a half inch of gravel for drainage, outside of the live scottish moss, i also keep live spiderplants in each corner, one covering its water source, and one covering the open corner of the setup, i also keep a nice piece of birds eye maple that i have boiled and baked, from what ive been told the plants, moss and wood are all safe, my green pacman has lived fine in these conditions, but if anyone else may have a different opinion i'm definatly open to them, the moss is not loose by the way its live and is rooted into the peat/soil mix, so i dont think impaction would be a problem, other than that my tank stays at around 84 during the day with a t-5 fluorescent light and after the light goes out for the night my tank drops down to about 76 degrees at night on the cool side of the tank, temps in the winter are a little cooler but not a major difference, humidity is also constantly over 80 percent, if anyone else has any advice or suggestions im defiantly open to them, these frogs are quite pricey and from what i collect a little more difficult to keep, on the good side im pretty sure this frog is captive bred, i could be wrong but its only the size of a golfball, and most wc's are usually at least 3 inches, anyways heres a pic of him and i'm sure i'll post some new pics of him in his new enclosure then that time comes, thanks for all of your time and hopefully if i might be doing something wrong in my enclosure you guys can give me some recommendations.

So to anyone who had heard I was getting a Fantasy Frog...Earlier the guy I ordered with told me he put in an order for both a Fantasy and an Ornate, specifically the reddest ones his breeder had (which as it turned out, was not very red). Between the two, the Ornate (at least I believe it was the Ornate since they were not labelled) had more red and was overall larger and apparently healthier...Moved around when touched, although not as aggressive as I pictured...Perhaps it's from being young. Anyhow, I set up most of his tank last night...10 gallon with EcoEarth (aka coconut fiber) and a glad tupperware with rocks on the inside to prevent drowning filled with water. Today I picked up some fake plants from Walmart and found an old piece of wood from a preview Tarantula enclosure and it ended up looking pretty decent. Provided are some pics. Can anyone confirm the species for me (I know they aren't terrible pics but he does lack the "horns" that the other frog clearly had) as well as critique his enclosure?. He is maybe the size of a quarter and has already eaten about half a giant Canadian Nightcrawler dusted with Calcium + D3 so I (fingers crossed) hope everything is ok with him.
